They had registration for next years (2008) IMWI today for the 2007 participants - I'm in for another!
Nice not to have to be there early on Monday morning.

What is wrong here? We fork over $500 a year in advance so we can chase the carrot at the end of the stick. Generally we are a fairly bright group but some times you have to wonder.
p.s. -Yesterday I bought airline tickets and signed myself and my wife up for IM-S.Africa April 2008
Keep that ball rolling RV, sooner or later we'll catch the carrot.

So, if I want to do 2008 IMWI, the way I read it is to register at 11am central time on Monday on active.com? Right now active.com has a link to 2008 IMWI but when you try to register it says category full. Why is that? Worrisome.

They have different registration times for different groups... the active thing is probably just not set up right yet (or perhaps the limitations of active make it have to say "full" when it is listed but not yet open for registration).

The break down on who can register when is on the IMWI website at http://www.ironmanwisconsin.com/entry.php

Oh... an update: looks like a link for active registration that got out earlier in the week was a bad link, and that one will say full. Go to active.com through the IM WI website at http://www.ironmanwisconsin.com/entry.php (the main page appears to not have a link to it yet) that will work for you. Some people have already registered online today...

Looks like it is now sold out -- people I know getting in online were doing so right at 11 central time.

Seriously, is it possible that this could be sold out that quickly? Its going to get to the point where you have to travel outside the US in order to particpate in an IM.

Yeah, it's definitely possible. The best way to get in these days is to be there -- I believe you are guaranteed a spot if you show up onsite. Whatever is left after the onsite is what is available online.

Yeah there are definitely lots of complaints about how much active.com is a hassle after each IM registration ;)

There was a HUGE line for registration on-site this morning. Hard to estimate but lots of the slots went right there - plus more went on Saturday for those racing this year - we could sign up early. So by the time it goes on-line - not many slots available.

The online hassles have happened frequently with IM lately--hundreds (thousands?) of people trying to get a couple hundred online spots. There was a thread on this a few weeks ago: http://www.trifuel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9385&highlight=active+registration

LP and Wisconsin seem to be among the toughest to register for online, but it's only a matter of time before the other U.S. races are the same. I'm guessing soon you might see onsite-only registration like in Canada or even a lottery. Although I guess signing up via active.com IS kind of like a lottery as things stand.

As for me, I'm in for 2008. I arrived at Monona Terrace a little after 7:00 this morning to find a line a couple hundred deep. The line easily tripled by the time they opened the doors just before 9. They did not allow you to sign up anyone other than yourself, and they were checking photo IDs.

Why not email the race directors now? I bet if you have proof of acceptance and also show them proof that you said you will attend that would be good enough. I'm not sure how the colligate signups work, but worth a try!

And come to think of it... I start grad school in Jan as well! Good thing it's already decided no IM next year.... or I'd be way too tempted!!

When I started thinking about doing an IM I was curious about the registration process, so I went online and looked at some of the IM races held in the U.S. and noticed they were full. It was last November and I quickly dismissed it as a "timing issue." But based on this, it appears I will need to be onsite to have a chance to register. So now I have a few questions for those familiar with the registration process:

1. Are all "official" (I guess meaning sponsored by Ford) IMs capped and if so at what number?
2. Is there a priority for the next year's slots? I.e., do people that race in the current year have priority over those who don't?
3. My assumption is that even if I show up for "on-site" registration" there is no guarantee of getting a slot.

Thanks,
Brad

1 - Not sure on that one. Last year we had a much larger field at IMWI - and this year had about 400 fewer - and it was sold out both years. Probably depends on the RD and the venue.
2. Yes the current years entrants do have a priority - at IMWI we were able to register for IMWI 2008 on Saturday.
3. I have not ever heard of anyone on-site ever being turned away. Tho the line on Monday for IMWI was many times larger than it was last year. Being on-site still is the best way to get in.

To the best of my knowledge, here are the answers to your questions:

1.Yes they are capped and I think that it dependent on which race it is but I believe they are capped at around 2000-2500 people

2. I believe that the people who are doing it this year get to register before everyone else does, even the people who show up to register onsite who didn't do this years race, but they do it onsite because they are already at the race.

3. If you show up to register onsite, I am pretty sure you are for the most part 100% guaranteed to get a spot.

1. Yes, each one takes only so many registrants, but the number changes. The race organizers expect a certain amount of attrition during the year, so they take more than actually show up. However, as those people cancel, they DO NOT free up additional spots.
2. At IMoo this year, they let current racers register for 2008 on Saturday instead of Monday. This is new.
3. Pretty much everyone who shows up on-site has gotten a spot to date, but that could change in the future.

There are some back doors into m-dot Ironman races. You can double your fee and get a community fund slot, or you can sign up for coaching/camp with multisports.com and get a slot included in their fee.

There also another way in: qualifying at certain Ironman 70.3 races for a spot in certain North American m-dot Ironman races. The details on this seem to change every year, but if you are very competitive in your age group you may want to look into it.

Potentially, the line could double again for next year... My dad and I will have to be there early (we are both planning for IMWI '09) (my dad did IMWI '06)

I was the first person in line this year and here is the answer.

1. there are no specific number of slots. If you show up the morning after the race you are guaranteed a spot.

as RV said all people who raced this year are guaranteed a spot as they are allowed to register the day before the actual race.

3. People at registration said that only about 100 spots went online this year because of the people at the event. Basically the way it works is that IMWI estimates that there will 2300 people doing the race. 1000 people get spots because they did the race that year. 1200 people were in line monday morning so therefore 100 spots go online when on site registration closes.

In the case of IMC no spots went online because there wer 2700 people there the day after the race. All 2700 got in but since it was over the projected number they did not put spots up online.

hope that clears it up.
