Muscle on outside of ankle - what is it and why so sore?
it's most likely a tendon which attaches to the muscle and connects it to the bone. it's tight and needs to be relaxed. if you stretch it, don't over stretch it as you could tear it.
massage, heat, rest will help.

I am with Toni...
A good massage will do wonders to you...
Don´t try to overstrech it...do it nice an easy but sustain when you strech.

I'm dealing with something similar....the only thing that seems to help is rest, which isn't exactly the best thing if you have a race ahead. My Doc prescribed Celebrex, which has worked very well at masking pain. Steroids perhaps are next, if the agony doesn't go away on it's own. Oh, I've also been going to two diff. physical therapists...one is real laid back and traditional, one is crazy aggressive w/the deep tissue release. Nether is working.
Another thing you should look at is getting a bike fit or having someone evaluate how you run.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
Yeah I agree on the relaxing and I have tried to self massage/roll to no avail. I agree with Nobody (that sounds weird) in that I should probably have my running looked at. I also just raised my seatpost a bit... but I have had this pain on and off for a while.
Nobody- let me know if you get anywhere.

What is the muscle called that is on the oustide of each calf that connects to the ankle? The outer calf or Tibialis anterior?
More importantly, mine have been really sore lately and I suspect it probably comes from a tight IT band. Anyone else have this problem and/or solutions? I am rolling the heck out of the IT after a workout and it hurts like a SOB.
