What scares you the most about your upcoming Ironman? Or if you are an Ironman what did you fear and how did you overcome it?

I have two big fears:
#1 - I'm spending 9 or 10 months training for one day. What if something happens (injury, illness, etc.) and I never even make it to the start? All that time and effort for nothing.
#2 - The swim...

1) Work, injury, family issues - something comes up that may prevent me from putting in the required time needed to prepare
2) The first 5-10 min of the swim - I think I'll be fine once my HR settles down from about 250 when the cannon sounds!

Honestly the greatest fear is not meeting my goals. The act of God during the IM that will stop you dead in your tracks (i.e., cramps, fall etc.). And trying to train for the IM with the goals in mind. Trying to make sure the training regime will work for the goals set out for you THAT day. So much on that day can change the desired time to complete each task. That's the greatest fear, the uncontrollable!

It really boils down to mental will and nutrition with me. Proper hydration, electrolyte balance and energy (food). The training to complete the event is mechanical and in many ways for me the easier part of the experience. As I say 10% physical and 90% mental and nutritional.

If you spend all that time training at least you have the fitness and health you have gained.
If you spent all that time training you should be okay on the swim.

When I got to IM I was fine.
I had done several 2 1/2 mile swims, several marathon and a couple of 100 + mile bike rides. I knew I could do each part seperately. I had been doing the training.
That prepared me mentally.
I just had to bring them together on race day.

My only worry on race day was if there was a mechanical failure with my bike, beyond something simple like a flat.

I knew in my gut when I was at the edge of the water nothing would stop me. I completely enjoyed the experience.

So will you. :D

"Games are an extension of practice."

If you practice properly, you will have no problem come race day.

What scares me the most?

Not finishing....but that is why I work so hard in training so that it won't be a possibility

I dont think I would want to convince myself that not finishing isnt a possibility, as it always is. We can reduce the chance of that happening dramatically, but theres still a chance.

I think I would prefer to convince myself that I have done everything possible to prepare myself for this event, execute your plan, and hope nothing goes wrong.

"What could possibly go wrong?!" you might ask. Not an answer for this thread, as the OP wasnt looking to be even MORE scared!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

what scares me the most? to know I didn't do enough miles, to come back the next day to the pool and not make improvements, to bunk during a long run without any apparent reason.

Fear of inadequate preparation should not be an issue. When you were in school and were about to take a test you had reason to be fearful if you did not do the reading or the required work that would be the tested. You know exactly what the test of ironman will be. Your preparation will be tested. If you have done the training and have the confindence in your plan and in yourself there is no place for fear.

The swim always creates anxiety regarless if the race is a sprint or something longer. If you are accustomed to swimming, you soon get in your own groove, relax and swim to the next marker.

Fear drains energy from the mind and body. Replace the fear (self-doubt) with confidence. Replace "I did not train enough" with
"my training has been solid, I am prepared to deal with this task, my body is strong, I will succeed. My mind is strong. I will succeed."
Positive self-talk is so important in all aspects of life.

1. Crashing at 86kph coming down out of the Richter Pass or Yellow Lake.

2. Having my colon re-sected from excessive dehydration.

3. Steve King getting my name wrong at the finish line.

but hey, if there was no risk, it wouldn't be fun.
