"La Revenge de Dodet" - XTERRA France
In 2004 Frenchman Sylvain Dodet (pictured) came to America and took the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series by storm, winning the East and West Championships and the overall series crown. In his first-ever XTERRA at Richmond Dodet upset Conrad “the Caveman” Stoltz (who followed him across the line in 2nd place), and Nico Lebrun who finished 3rd.
Out since 2005 with injuries, Dodet will return to XTERRA at the French Championships on Sunday at Auron in the Alpes Maritimes, high above Nice. This ski resort location sits at 1600m or 5,300 feet. A particularly short swim, a technical and very fast bike course and rugged run will test if Dodet has the magic he held in the 2004 season.
Two of Dodet’s strongest competitors from that year, Stoltz and Lebrun, are here to welcome him back. The weather as of Thursday was cool with showers but the forecast for Sunday's race is for a sunny day with temperatures in the low 70's (23 C).
The drive from the Nice airport to Auron is fantastic. While not far in miles or kilometers, the road goes up and twists and turns with some mountain hairpins slowing you down to second gear. Tunnels through the granite mountains, tall pines in the forests, and small villages keep things very interesting. The village of Auron is a typical ski resort with most of the hotels and restaurants on a part-time basis in the summer. But the invading forces of XTERRA athletes are slowly bringing the town to life with a bundle of French competitors coming up on Wednesday to practice the course.
HORN, CAYLER WIN XTERRA TRIMAX
By Rich Costello, XTERRA Athlete
In its' second year, the XTERRA Trimax was held at the scenic and remote Raymond B. Winter State Park, conveniently situated, somewhat in the middle of the state of Pennsylvania, tucked away neatly amongst the rolling hills and fields of local farms that make up the surrounding landscape. Many XTERRA athletes from out of town made this race a must do on their personal race schedules' this year and those that came were treated to flower and plant life in full bloom, as well as wild blueberries that many enjoyed snacking on whilst up top of the mountain during pre-rides.
