The reason this is a 1/3 RR is because I did this as a relay. I thought it was a bit ambitious to do a 1/2 IM my first tri season. I was really excited about this because it was the first time I got to do an open water swim at 110% instead of worrying how I was going to bike and run afterwards.
Race morning I was so lost! All I had to do was put my wetsuit on! So I had to watch everyone else rack their bikes, check their shoes, assemble race belts, etc. I never thought I'd actually miss all of this. Finally, I decided it was ok to start the bodyglide slathering and work my way into the wetsuit. Water temp was a bit on the nippy side(low 60s) but I enjoy that. This was my first out and back swim (opposed to triangle like swims). The line of bouys lined up perfectly with the sun rising over the lake. Still not sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Sighting on the way out was super easy...if the sun was glaring in your eyes, you were going the right direction. Even though the waves didn't have too many people in them, this was still by far the most bodily swim I've ever had. Usually folks settle out in the first 500m. Not here, I somehow managed to swim over top of people almost the whole way! The out part of the swim was rather uneventul, other than I lost count of bouys and was hoping I'd figure out which one was the turnaround bouy. The way back was a bit interesting. Halfway back I had a panic attack because I realized I forgot to tell my husband good luck in his first duathlon (still can't get him wet)! I'm so used to him being a spectator, it didn't occur to me that when he saw me off he was waiting for his start wave! As I'm fighting off horrible wife feelings the rest of the way back, the wind had picked up and I managed to drink most of the lake. Thus leading to a rather nauseous feeling. I sight the last bouy and am feeling pretty good...all I can see are yellow caps (wave ahead of me), but there's one green cap (wave behind me)...where did he come from? Oh well...off to tag the biker.
And then it was done...and I got to watch the rest of the tri. Now I'm officially starting end of the season tri-withdrawl!
