I am relatively new to triathlon, came from play lacrosse and football. I began training for Ironman Coeur d' alene five months ago using an online training guide. I have progressed to the point where I can swim around 3,500 yards, Bike up to 70-80 miles and run 13-14 miles. I know this might sound ridiculous but is this good so far after five months of training with 7 months to go till IMCD? Please let me know. Thanks so much for the insight.

Looks pretty good Josh. Just make sure to take your time and get your rest in too. Building the distances up from this far out could end in you being real tired and burnt in April. Hopefully those online plans have some speed and built in recovery weekly so your not getting stale. Also I might suggest a decent size break in the next 6 weeks to start another build from there.

Looks good, enjoy the journey- Matt

Compared to what?

Speed & distance are the measures here.

Being able to swim 3500yds might be good if you couldn't swim 5 months ago, unless it takes you 3 hours and you do it doggypaddle. Otoh, being able to swim 3500 yds at all is a good thing.

Biking 80 miles can't be a bad thing, but if it takes 10 hours who cares? If you swim badly at CdA you would have 8 hours MAX to ride 112 miles. That's 14mph, rock bottom standard.

14 miles on foot? Again if you walked it it would take 3 hours, give or take. Grandma can do that. The bike course closes at 5:30 pm. That leaves 6.5 hours to go 26 miles. Do the math that's 4mph.
I think that's about the speed my 70 yr old mother used to push a cart around Safeway shopping for groceries.

You were right, the question is ridiculous given the information you have left out about yourself.
Go to an IM website. Check out the results in your age group. See what pace the winner in your AG did. THAT's a good pace. See how you compare.
If you just want to finish, check out the pace of the slowest competitors overall who DID finish. Then you will get an idea of what is necessary.

Fill out your profile on trifuel so that the next time you ask for advice we have some reference points. OKay?

Welcome to trifuel. Good luck.

Thanks Matt I appreciate the advice, and yes there are very structured speed work, rest weeks and recovery periods. PrinceofClydes, I fully understand the relativity of distance, I was simply assuming a solid pace throughout. I average just under 2:00 min per 100 yards while swimming. During bike training I am able to hold a constant cadence of around 90 rpm while on the trainer, in my last training ride i was averaging 18 miles mph over a 70 mile ride, and I am running 13 miles in around 1:50:00. These are all training, non-race sessions. Is that fast enough for you? Or maybe your 70 year old mother should train me at Safeway.

Ohh, snarkiness on a 2nd post. "The force is strong in this one."

:)

______
Why? Many people have asked me... to test my limits ... and to push beyond them.

If you "fully understand" and already know what a "solid pace" is, you don't need to ask the "ridiculous" question, do you?

"Please help rate my progress!" becomes a disingenuous cry for attention thereby.

btw, what AG are you in?
You should fill out your trifuel profile.

Josh...keep up the good work. Don't let Princeofclydes get you down, he just had a bad day. I do recommend looking at the various times of people in your age. find out the pace of the events so that you have a breakdown of what it takes to finish. That is the main goal for your first one, then progress from there on your other IM goals. GOodluck!
