Is it worthwhile to upgrade from Visiontech aluminium to carbon aero bars? This is for a new bike, so I'm not sure if this change is significant from a weight or road vibration perspective.

Please advise.

It sounds cool to say Carbon Aero Bars : ))

Specifically which ones? The integrated ones? The weight weenie is me cringed when I did this, but I compared aluminum and carbon and their "lightest" bars were 975g, or a 2.15lbs, or nearly as much as a wheelset! Alumnimun in the same design were 1,050g, or 2.31lbs. With only a 75g difference between the two, I see no advantage in going from aluminum to carbon.

To get past the 75g difference, I can ride a few extra training miles.

I wouldn't bother with carbon bars, alloy vision base bars are fine for me

Lots of advantages to the alloy base bar, including the fact that you can use brake levers other than the Vision ones in them. Your carbon fork should be dampening vibration in that part of the bike as much as possible. A little tape on the bar ends can take care of the rest.

What is the drawback with the Vision break levers?

Comfort is a draw back on vision brake levers, they are very thin. I have tek-pro carbon levers on my base bar. They are fantastic, so comfortable, stiff too. My brother has profile desgn carbon levers on his, they have more flex and are not as comfortable.

I would definitely say save the money and go aluminum. The trade-offs don't add up except for the cool factor as you mentioned already.

Comfort is one issue with the Visions, proprietary cables is the other.

I use the Profile QS carbons and find them plenty comfortable. No, they don't have a thumb groove up top like some levers, (cane creeks?) but I don't find myself missing that since I'm trying to minimize how much time my hands are out on the bullhorns anyway. Just give me a strong return spring and a semi-comfortable feel and I'm good to go (or stop, as the case may be).
