when it's wet, do you run in a rain jacket/pants?

so, the weather has finally turned to wet & windy here in Portland, and the season seems to be setting in. it's dark for my morning and evening commutes now so it's cooler and less forgiving for clothing; although it's definitely not cold yet.

in past winters, i've run in the following (top to bottom):

  • tech ball cap (nike dryfit); or helly hansen skull cap if it's < 40deg.
  • loose tech shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve depending on temps)
  • long sleeve tight tech shirt (like nike pro)
  • gloves if it's < 30deg
  • running shorts with built-in liner (40degs & above); or running pants (loose, tapered at the ankle w/a zip) for colder
  • smartwool running socks

i'm starting to wonder if i should go all tight lycra so that i'm not carrying loose water logged fabric; or if i should consider getting a water resistant layer (jacket & pants).

i run pretty hot; and I've always thought i would end up getting wet from the inside anyway, but i'm starting to reconsider...

what are your experiences?
how do you dress for the cold and wet?

thanks up front!

-Tech hat
-Base layers
-Brooks Waterproof running jacket
-Gloves if it is cold
-Shorts(until it gets below 40 degrees)
-Running Pants(Below 40)
-Wicking socks

If it is really nasty I'll take it inside and run on the treadmill

Craft base layer with craft run jacket, keeps me warm below 30F, if it's below 0F then i add another layer under my jacket. Jacket is water resistant, so when it starts raining, it's enough to get me home, but i'm wet underneath anyway from sweat.
cw-x tights with shorts on top, just because i don't like my butt on display, though i have gotten good comments ;)
Some gloves and hat, don't really remember what it is.

Love running in the cold!

Its getting wet and cold here in MN as well...nice sprinkle coming down right now as a matter of fact.
If its around 45+ i will wear shorts even if its raining. Below that, it depends on the wind conditions
I will ususally wear under armor cold gear when it drops below 40 and something lighter, but still tech and long sleeved if its above 40ish.
I also have a nike Dry fit 1/4 zip top i bought a few years back...and that thing rocks. Keeps wind off the base layer and pulls sweat off the base as well. I wear it for running, cycling, snowboarding...anything where i can get sweaty.
If its raining, i will go with the free swag running jacket if its light or just stay home!
I prefer the hat+moisture wicking headband combo down to 15 deg or so and up to about 40 until i get warmed up. Colder than 15, beine, and colder than 0+windchill..balaclava (Sugoi).

I also prefer running in the cold to the wet, you cant shake the wet off while your in it, but you can warm up!

No matter what I wear, I end up peeling off a layer or two and tying them around my waist. I just make sure I have moisture wicking stuff as my very base layer and then pull on layers of warmth over that. Last year I bought a jacket (from REI or EMS, can't remember) that really did the job well. It was warm, water resistant, wind resistant yet light weight. got my money's worth on that one. I was able to run in everything the North East threw at us last year. I would check your local outdoor/sporting good stores to see what's new. Hope you find something that keeps ya warm and dry!

That which does not kill me makes me faster...

How wet are we talking about here? Sleet or monsoon?

For Portland, I'm presuming small rain/sleet turning to snow/slush as the temps dip. For that, I go with shorts/liner on the bottom down to 35 deg, at which point it usually turns to sleet/snow and waterlogging is less of a concern. 34 deg down to 20 I'll go with lightweight tights. Below 20 it's heavy, therma-fleece tights that work pretty well into the negatives. Much below -10 and I don't bother getting out of bed (don't expect anything that cold where you are, though).

On top, it's similar. Short sleeve tech down to 50, long sleeve from 49-40, and long sleeve with vest down 30. Gloves some into play around 30/35. Again, once snow hits I'm just looking for warmth, especialy on top, so it'll be a short sleeve tech tee with running jacket from 30-15 deg. Then short sleeve + long sleeve + jacket below that.

No beanie for running in the rain since the ears don't feel it until about 25 deg, so just a standard running hat or headband in the rain to keep the hair out of my eyes.

Overall, I try to go as minimal as possible when slogging in the rain and would rather run a bit cold, but light, than only moderately warmer and soaked.

thanks for everyone's comments!

it's the in-between temps that are more prevalent here...40's & wet (not so much with the white stuff). it's shorts weather, but you start to want a long sleeve and maybe a wind layer. only winter mornings get below 40...and rare weeks where the city shuts down from snow (I'm talking to you, Last December!) .

i'm going to purchase a jacket and see how that goes...maybe try short sleeve underneath to start
