I knew this guy, we weren't friends or anything, but I knew who he was. It was a hit and run . They haven't caught the person yet. I bike not too far from there.

Please be careful out there.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

Last summer we lost two people in our little community to bike/car accidents. An elderly woman hit a kid on Main St. And on the same road, a 65 yr old man, two days from retiring, swerved into oncoming traffic when he passed a parked car and the occupant suddenly opened the car door. So tragic. I now ride in groups as often as possible.

That which does not kill me makes me faster...

We got an email telling about an athlete who was signed up to do Austin who was killed ALONG WITH his wife while riding a tandem at the beginning of October. They left a 4 yr old girl behind. Absolutely tragic. They had a little memorial with his IM louisville medal hanging from his bike rack # at the race. It brought me to tears.

Riding on the road scares me more than it used to. It's very sad to hear about another cyclist being hit. I have almost been hit 3 times in the last few months. Once, I was in one of those bike lanes that goes between the main lanes and a turn lane, and this SUV was trying to go across the bike lane into the turn lane and was about 6 inches away from crushing me. I don't think the lady saw me at all though I am not sure how she could have missed me. It really is dangerous out there.

Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

Truly sad. The cost of a fit lifestyle should never have be so great or ended so abruptly by an inattentive, careless driver.

I tend to be a fairly aggressive rider and runner utilizing the necessary safety equipment to be visually obvious and venomously loud when necessary, but it's tragic that even with every precaution it can all be undone in a split second.

I know for me it's always somehow in the back of my mind when I go out, but I refuse to let it deter me from what I enjoy. Too many issues to discuss here, but drivers need to focus on one thing and one thing only, driving.

While it is a law for kids here under a certain age to wear a helmet I notice too many youngsters riding without one and when an adult rides with their kids, the adult almost never has a helmet on. Bad example of course. And what right minded parent would let their kids ride at night? Ans drivers need to focus but so do bike riders as they are at a disadvantage.

So sad. I dunno what its gonna take to get something changed/ have a culture shift... It makes me so sad and mad at the same time. I can't give up my lifestyle with the threat of this though. Never will. We can't be scared.

there was a previous thread on this board - that has made me no matter how beautiful the day - i have started keeping my lights on no matter when i ride my bike....
i got one of those bullfrogs for that back that has a lot of sequences...
maybe a false sense of security - but i hope with all the cars whizzing around - it makes me more visible.

even though it gets really boring - i guess i am lucky that i only have to cycle for 1 mile before i am in a car free park...

That really sucks. I almost got clipped by an SUV yesterday that wasn't using a signal. Cycling has made me a better driver, I'm way more aware of whose on the road.

I'm in the middle of an astonishing debate on an anonymous moms' forum in my town about cyclists on the road. One woman is saying that bicycling should be banned except on designated bike paths because it is such an incredibly dangerous activity. Her analogy is that cigarettes/alcohol used to be unrestricted until the gov't realized how dangerous they were, and that we used to not be required to wear seatbelts, and so they should change the laws and ban bikes as dangerous and unsafe.

Most of the other posters are the standard "cyclists are rude, swerve in and out of traffic and run red lights so why should I give them any extra consideration". Horrible stories posted in this thread, but keep in mind that our behavior on bikes today impacts the way drivers view that next bike on the road tomorrow.

How many drivers die when they get hit by a bicycle?

Yes, the slow erosion of American liberties is here.....if its dangerous to anyone at all, do away with it.....such a boring thing life would be....
