It was cold and dark start on October 18th. We waited for a while at the hotel since it was only 2 blocks away from the start of the marathon.
When I got to the start it was a bit chaotic, seemed like lots of people crammed into one small space at the start. It was so packed I couldn’t get to the 4:00 pace group and ended up starting way behind 5:30 pace group.
Then as everyone started to slowly move towards the start, right in the middle there were about 5 guys/girls standing like an immovable island in the middle of a river waiting for something and made everyone walk around them, that was not cool.
After that the run went well. The first several miles you could see every ones breath in the cold crispy air, and it looked like the whole current of runners was steaming.
Columbus course is pretty flat with a few very low grade ups but mostly downs, which makes is a very nice fast race.
Volunteers and supporters were great, water and Gatorade stations were about every mile or so. The race is well organized and well run. I would definitely recommend it.
I didn’t have too many problems during the run, but at around mile 12 my right big toe starting hurting and I could feel every uneven ground with it and the pain was pretty bad. The first few miles after that I tried to brush the pain aside and tried stepping on all the flat spots on the road, and it worked for a while but in a few miles the pain came back. Then I decided to concentrate on the pain, on all the pain I was feeling everywhere and enjoy it. I told myself, if I’m feeling pain, I’m going as fast as I can. And I enjoyed it all the way to the finish. I caught up with the 4:00 hr pace group at about mile 20 and thought about running with them but felt like they were going too slow for me, so I passed them. I even picked up the pace in the 2nd half and really picked up the pace on the last mile.
I wanted to finish in less than 4 hours, and I did, with a final time of 3:52:58

Awesome run! Congrats.
Did you run negative splits?

Hard days hard, easy days easy.

Thanks!
I still need to check my garmin stats but as i recall it i did end up with negative splits, which is pretty cool that i was able to do that in the marathon.
My pace for the 2nd half was about 5 seconds faster then for the first.

Nice job Konstantin. Sub 4 hours is cool! Way to take the pain and make it yours.

I'm going to need more numbers to start with. Was that your first marathon? Do you have a training log with how many average miles from 12, 14, etc (whenever you "started" training) weeks out? When is the next marathon and what goals are you thinking about for it?

Their half marathon is the first big race (1000+ runners) I ever did. It was a lot of fun and a great event. Thanks for the report, and well done.

OK, let me try to put it in numbers.
I used to hate running and couldn't run for 5 minutes. Then after getting bored with weight lifting and after not having definite goals i started running a little in 2006 and made myself like it and enjoy it.
I really started running and doing triathlons in 2007. My first marathon was 2007 Chicago marathon 30th anniversary which was canceled during the race due to heat wave, it was my first and hardest marathon so far but i did finish it in 5:09:31
Then my next marathon was 2008 Goofy Challenge 4:28:46 (keep in mind i ran a half the day before)
Next marathon was 2008 Chicago marathon 4:05:37
And finally 2009 Columbus marathon 3:52:58 with the following splits: 10k-54:52, Half-1:56:52, 20m-2:58:00, pace 8:54 Overall i'm 1631/4087 (faster then average :)
I looked at the data from my Garmin and it's a bit off. Garmin shows total distance ran 26.53 and shows pace for the first half 8:50/mile and 2nd half pace 8:42/mile. It did feel that i was running faster then 8:54 pace but i'm still happy with it.
Before that i ran about 25-30 miles every week with long runs going from 12 to 22 being longest. I usually always try to make my long runs not less then 12-13 miles every week, except for the last weekend before the race, i run about 8 long miles.

My next marathon is Goofy 2010 again, and the goal for that one is to run it again under 4 hours, since it will be the day after half and i will be going from cold Chicago weather to Florida.

Now that i think about it, i should be running faster by now :)
