hello everyone, i am new to this forum and triathalons in general; last weekend i went to my friends apartment complex, which has a 25m pool, full gym(inc. stationary bike, treadmill) I decided the previous day that i was going to try to do a sprint triathalon. i thought i was in decent shape just from eating right and having a quite active lifestyle(martial arts), i have never been so tired in my entire life. i did 29(x25) 725m laps in the pool in 23 minutes, then set the bike on 5 resistance(1-10) and did 12 miles in 41 minutes, the finished with a hobble on the treadmill of 37 minutes for 3 miles. i am not really interested in running in a sanctioned race for now, but i gained immense respect for all triathaletes by feeling it firsthand.

they sure are a test of fitness and mental toughness. Looks like you were doing just fine until that run on the treadmill. Glad you had fun!

Nice effort, but I wouldn't put too much stock in your performance. Just because you're fairly fit doesn't mean your ready for that type of event. Trust me, no one here just jumped in and did those distances. We worked up to it, and you can too!

Hi all! I'm new to this forum and tri's in general. I have never really done much running on a treadmill before. Does anyone know how running on a treadmill relates to running on flat ground? I think I remember somewhere reading that running on a treadmill is easier at the same speed and one can add about 1% incline to the treadmill to make them comparable. Does anyone have experience with this? It would be really easy in a gym to do the bricks from swimming to stationary cycling to running on a treadmill. Thanks!

Robert,

I agree, the treadmill is a good alternative for bricks, especially in the winter (depending on where you live). Rather than trying to figure out the equivalence of incline and pace, etc, why not just use heart rate as a proxy and go with that? For example, you could do 45:00 on the bike at 130-135HR followed immediately by 15:00 on the t'mill at 150-55. There's very little difference between 15:00 on the t'mill or road at that intensity.
