Protein Suplementation and Brain Fuzzies?
Weird. The only thing I noticed was the last ingredient: Cocoa, which probably has some caffeine. How much caffeine do you usually take if? If you don't usually have any, you might get a caffeine buzz of just a bit of it.
Otherwise, I'd say try a different protein replacement and see if you still get this buzzed feeling. If so, its not the drink. If you only get it with the drink, I'd look for something else.
Hard days hard, easy days easy.
I've taken several different protein supplements both whey and casein proteins and have never had a buzz like you describe. Could be the caffeine in yours?
______
Why? Many people have asked me... to test my limits ... and to push beyond them.
Not sure I see the problem. In fact, I am heading out to get some of this stuff as soon as I can before somebody makes it illegal.
I also use protein powder from GNC, but mine only has 20 g per scoop. Obviously, I just needed to up the dose. Thanks for the tip.
Many people are sensitive to artificial sweeteners. Their symptoms are often described similarly to what you posted. So it could be the sucralose.
Some people drink it so often they aren't aware of the effect any longer.
msg makes me feel that way, but I can't imagine anyone putting that in protein powder
Taper Naked
I just made another shake after coming in from my run and it still has the same effect. It makes me feel a little lightheaded, my face feels a little flush, and I don't know if it's post run endorphins or not but I also feel a bit giddy. (I'm not really worried or anything but just like to know what's going on)
I'm guessing it has something to do with either the cocoa or sucralose as well. As I do not drink anything diet or anything with caffeine on a regular basis. I read the back of the container in the store looking for rouge ingredients and missed the sucralose on the label. However, cocoa is not mentioned on either of the flavors packaging. So maybe on the website they listed the ingredients for the chocolate flavor?
If they all have cocoa, that could be what I'm feeling, as I've not had really any measurable amounts of caffeine in close to 4 years.
slowbutmoving: I wasn't really worried per se, but I've never taken protein powder and wasn't sure if that was the norm. Mine also has 20g per scoop, but I've been putting 3 in each shake.
jtrimom: I have a similar effect with MSG also, and I think you're right about it not being in there.

Acesulfame Potassium is also a sweetener.

It seems that you eat very cleanly, so you might appreciate seeing what food manufactures do to make stuff "healthy".
Polydextrose AKA Fake Fiber

I realize this stuff isn't necessarily mix and drink, but it appears to be clear of fake stuff and matches up nicely with your protein per calorie ratio.

I haven't seen this mentioned but are you also getting some carbs?
You could be buzzing because you are bonking without sufficient carb replacement after your activity.
Protein is great but you do need to replace carbs soon after you are done with your training.

Oh yeah, I get good carbs all day long. I'm really big on pre and refueling. I just decided to add a protein supplement because as my sessions get longer and longer, it was talking longer to recover. I decided to give it a shot and see if my lower protein diet could be causing or contributing the need for increased rest.

You're not mixing it with tequila by any chance?
I find that has me buzzing after a workout! ;-)

Thats a good question! Was it the water pitcher I'm grabbing out of the fridge or is it the vodka pitcher?........I guess I'll have to try the other pitcher and see if that's my issue! lol......
(oh and no....I dont have a pitcher dedicated to just vodka. Just 3 for water)
This still has my laughing and a little weirded out, but like I said, I'm not really worried. but after these 2 containers are gone I will try something different and see if its the brand.

Good plan.
I'm curious have you noticed a difference upping your protein intake? I often feel I'm selling myself short by not doing the protein recovery as often as I should.

Yes, I have noticed quite a difference in my recovery since I started taking the supplements. My legs feel tired/sore for a much shorter time after a long or intense interval ride. My muscles just seem to recover faster after aerobic training or a weight training session (my core especially). And I just feel like I'm getting stronger faster. (albeit the last one could be purely mental)
These gains and shortened recovery could be different for someone who's diet might be centered around protein. I myself only eat lean meats a couple times a week, but when I do they are the best I can find. (fresh salmon, mahi, skinless chicken) The bulk of my diet is mainly fresh/raw vegetables, beans, tofu, nuts, peanut butter, rice, and the occasional egg or two.
So if your diet is already full of lean protein you may not have the same experience. Or you may only have to use 1 shake of 40g of protein per day instead of 60-80g like myself.
If you do decide to use a protein supplement I would recommend getting a very lean powder as opposed to the higher caloric stuff marketed to bodybuilding. That way you can more easily manage your diet and get good quality calories instead of sugars.
Sorry for the book!

Oh, and it seems the fuzziness was being caused by the cocoa in the chocolate flavored mix. It seems my lack of consumption for the past years has really decreased my tolerance to caffeine.
Good call Crazyfranco!
Anyways off to swim then out for an extended ride!
Thanks for all your info guys, I learn something new everythread. Even if it's only how to taper naked!

Yes! Glad you figured it out. Are you building up a tolerance again, or did you switch flavors?
Hard days hard, easy days easy.
Yeah, I gave away the chocolate to my bro (it's the only flavor he'll even buy), kept the vanilla, and bought banana.
I'm trying to keep my tolerance low. Back in HS our swim team would cut out caffeine for the season so that during sectionals the tea our coach made would have more of an effect.
I'm hoping that if I'm dragging my sorry but through the run next year @ IMFL a small coke or 2 during the last few miles might help a bit. (I know, I know...nothing new on race day!)

Ok so I don't know how to exactly phrase this but here goes....
Have any of you that supplement with protein powders or drinks ever experienced a euphoric or light headedness 15-20 mins after drinking?
I know this seems odd (at leat to me), but I recently started a protein supplementation regimen to go with my IM training plan. So I went to the store to get the most lean protein powder I could find (not a weight gainer with excess calories or added fluff).
The best they had locally was GNC Wheybolic 60 (60g protein in 280 cals). So I bought 2 flavors and headed home for my brick. I did a pretty brisk 2.5 hrs on the bike with 30mins of running @ +30sec/mile race pace and felt pretty good afterward.
As soon as I got home I stretched, put up the bike, and made a snack of some fruit and a protein shake. Now the strange part...
About 20 mins after drinking the shake I started to feel only what I can describe as "high or buzzed." Now this is not a typical "runners high," that I experience when I'm in "the zone" and the workout flies by, but a full on holy crap head buzz that lasted almost an hour. At 1st I thought this was a fluke from pushing a bit hard the last few on the bike. But this has happened for the last 4 days.
Now, I know that I haven't been hitting 2g protein/lb of body weight 100% of the time since I switched to a fairly strict veg diet. Although I still do eat lean meats maybe 3 times a week, and I always try to get quite a bit of protein daily as I eat beans, tofu, peanut butter, nuts, cheese, and eggs. So I'm at a loss......
Is this from 60g of protein slamming into me all at once or am I just going nutz?
Here's the website for whats in the powder I've been using, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary in the listed ingredients.....
