Rims shot?
Oh, you sure can wear through metal with rubber, look at an old marble stair case. My old middle school has huge divots where nearly infinite children have trod. The bigger abrasive is the road grime that your break pads trap and then wear on the rims. I've never worn, no have I heard of wearing through a rim by breaking. If you did however, it would be spectacular. See if bontrager wants to sponsor you for riding that much as a witness to their quality. As for gear, sorry, you'll have to get someone elses suggestions. I just don't keep current with that stuff.
Rims wear out. It happens, I've gone through a set of MTB wheels. It usually takes a good long while to happen, though.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
i think that there are gauges you can buy, or techniques for measuring the amount of rim that you have left. unfortunately, though, all rims, alloy or carbon, wear out. the only ones that don't are disc only, or track rims.
i've had this because i commute all year
the road grit gets picked up in the rubber and grinds down the aluminum...it's really not even a contest when you think about it. you probably can feel the ridge/line where they are wearing down.
don't linger too much on it...it does happen
anyway, it's a justifiable excuse to go wheel shopping! :)
if you do wear them all the way through you should send pictures. :) I have a degree in Chem E with a focus in materials. I like seeing things break.... enginerds...

I had a bike mechanic tell me that my rear rim is shot... if I keep riding it he said it will fail, probably spectacularly.
Anyone else have this happen!? My mind can't get over rubber brakes wearing out a solid metal rim! And any suggestions for reasonably priced replacements? My current rims are Bontrager SSR's, I think they're pretty entry-level... might as well upgrade while I'm at it.
