Man I look great in spandex, this year can't be over!
I know what you mean, when I had my big "A" race last Saturday I was sad that the races I loved driving up to the mountains for, busting my a** and lungs over, and hanging out afterwards for awards with new race friends is over. I still have one 24 Hour race in October to look forward to, but really I consider my 2009 racing season over. So sad.
On the bright side I have HUGE plans for next year and I'm excited to write up a training plan for those. I raced xc mtb this year, and next year I want to be faster at those races and also tackle a 24 Hour race solo and race the Breck Epic. Both are new levels of endurance I haven't attempted before, so it'll be interesting one way or another. Oh, and I'm planning to get a coach for the first time!!!

nononononono---the season is NOT over yet!!!!!
[hands over my eyes] it's not true!!!
I have thru the end of october! (one of the few perks of living in the South)

I am in running season, one fun tri left here in my community (just for fun to see if we can organise one, we are doing a little local sprint). Good season, met my goals in training all year and at all my B races, missed my goals in my A race on the run only (cramped in the heat, so learned about something I need to do in my training next season). I am looking at next year too, starting a strength program next week with a local personal trainer three mornings a week at 530am (gak) and with a new location for my job, I should be able to swim five mornings a week.
Goals I met:
sub 7m 500m swim, sub 25m 1500 swim
avg speed of above 35km/h for 40k, above 37km/h for 20k
ran sub 20m 5k, sub 21m in a sprint, sub 45m 10k (not in a tri)
Next season will be HIM's and long course in prep for 2011 Ironman (probably Cozumel or IMLP)
Good thread!

Sue, this is my plan too! I am signed up for Rhode Island 70.3 next July and if that goes well (I don't die or something) I am looking at Cozumel for 2011. It would be a blast to meet you there!
This season was so incredibly fun! I did every race I had planned, 2 sprints, an oly, a 10 miler, a duathlon and I have another oly to close the season on Sept 12th. Then the Philadelphia half mary in November. In my spare time, I am trolling the internet for a clearance TT bike ; )
I am NOT looking forward to dragging my trainer out of the basement : P
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
I really enjoyed this year too. I managed to meet my goal of completing not one, but two sprints. I was just another fat guy in April of last year and these races were the culmination of a new life and the loss of 90lbs since April 2008.
I'm getting signed up for a half mary in October, November and a full in December. Then its time to find an indoor pool and conquer my nemesis in time for next year. Luckily I can bike all year 'round here.
Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

My year is over...... well for Tri's anyway.
7 race, 6 top ten, 4 top 5, and 2 podiums. 6'4" 238 pounds, down 20 from Jan 1st.
1 Half (Broke a seat clamp at mile 38 and missed my 6 hr goal by 10 minutes).
1 Oly (Sub 3, Yahoo).
5 Sprints (All as expected).
Have to throw in a 6 week break of no training for international travel int here as well, so it was a great year for me.
Next year, I will get below 6hrs, and drop another 20 pounds.
One of the best thing about being a newbie is that you always meet your goals! I only had 3 races and I have a marathon coming up in October. I didn't get to do as many races as I wanted this year but that is ok...I learned so much from each one and I improved a little at each one! I am kind of excited for the off season - only because I know how I want to use the off season! There will be the addition of a trainer to my tools (which I am sure I will grow to *love* HA!) and some warmer running clothes. I just absolutely cannot deal with running on the treadmill while the heat is blowing on me! While the trainer may be boring I at least can put that someplace cool....boring...but cool. There is SO much I want to do this winter. Work on my stroke in the pool and on the bike. Knowing now that my runs will suffer if I take them inside I will keep them outside as much as possible. So much to do....so little time!

i loved this tri season! now its on to running season... 2 marathons, chicago and a local trail race with tons of hills!
i also hit a lot of goals this season, made my first podium and cracked 20 MPH on two HIM courses and swam as fast as last year with significantly less time in the pool!
as for next years plans, i am very tempted to dip my feet in the 50 mile pool. no matter what i seem to train for, or where i seem to be swimming biking or running, i always wish i was on the trails...

I wish there was a 50 mi pool in my area ;)

Met goal of podium once, was 1st out of water in one of my races- no idea how that happened but I'll take it (ended up 2nd OA swim but led my wave for about 3 mi into the bike). Now I have goals for next year at these same races, and others to try out.
HIM next Sunday, Sept. 13, (my first!) to finish off tri season. Half marathon in Nov. with a couple 5-10k's thrown in the mix.
Spoke with a swim coach and will be scheduling a couple appts, looking into snowshoes to broaden my running options and of course, shredding tires to please the trainer gods.
i dont know what today will bring to me, but thats just fine.
I have one more race this year - and have completed 4 (sprints).
I remember back to March - my first 10K ever (I started running late last year). I felt such elation when I finished - that I thought "wow. i did it. what else can I do? how about a tri?". So I joined USAT, registered for a race, and started training April 1st.
With each race, I set and reached (most) goals. I am comfortable in open water, and swam a mile for the first time in my local lake last month. No podiums yet, but I've moved from the bottom of MOP to top of MOP in most races. 21 / 91 AG in NJ State Tri. And I've been working on strategies to balance training w family life and work - maybe one of the toughest goals of all.
Met some great people - and am consistently amazed at how warm and friendly we triathletes are. It's awesome. Love to read (and share) RR with this community.
My season will culminate Sept 27 w a local HIM. Sure it will be painful, but I HAVE to tri it. It's calling me. I know you all understand that.
Already planning a family vaca next August around the Timberman HIM. Best of all is that the family supports it.
Masters swims over the winter, bike trainer in the basement.
Is it March yet?
______
Why? Many people have asked me... to test my limits ... and to push beyond them.
Season Over?? Not for this guy. I have an olympic in two weeks and then Longhorn 70.3 in late October. Im hoping this just keeps me going into next season as will be attempting IM Canada for the first time!
I have my last Sprint a week from Sat.
Haven't had my heart into it this year, looking at that really? Continuing training though has made me feel better.
Hopefully next year I will do a Oly distance race as well as 4 sprints? I think I'm a few years out from a HIM.
I have a similar concern this year... It has been a great year for me in terms of increasing my general fitness level and adding speed, and I don't want to lose what I gained for next year! My off season plan at the moment is to start P90X (for the 2nd time around) on Oct 1 through the end of the year, then start tri training again in first week of Jan. That worked great last year, but I didn't get my speed gains until the end of this season.
I have my A race this weekend, and have promised the family to take time off afterwards, but just know I'm going to miss it....
Well you can still put on the spandex and watch the Vuelta a Espana over at Universal Sports dot com.
This morning Simon Guerans won the breakaway sprint on his Cervélo, which made me proud, purely from a vicarious POV.
And I was wearing my spandex running shorts for my run out to the lake this morning, so the thrill of encasing your hide in elastic material doesn't have to be entirely done yet.

true!!! But running around my small little town in spandex gets too many people involved and starts too much talk around town!!

My little town is ~40,000 people nestled in the mountains among 3 lakes.
Most guys here have never owned spandex or even know someone who has owned spandex. So I think people see me and shake their head a little.
heh.
What do they know?

cjhofmn - I'm with you on the p90x, trying it for my first time. Trying to rebuild the general body strength I lost while IM training.
I'll looking forward to all the stuff I missed during the summer while I was out going LOOONNGG. Climbing, Mtn Biking, Hiking, Camping, Etc. getting out with no agenda and just playing outside....
the race was great, the season is over. I could talk about my accomplishments and failures(plenty of both), instead I'll say, THANK YOU, so much, to the volunteers who make every single triathlon a safe, happy, warm, loving environment. Never have people who make NO MONEY made an event so enjoyable....SO THANK YOU!!!!! For your time, your sweat, your blood, your attitude, Thank you...

This is a season ending appreciation/mourning thread. I have two races left in my first full year of triathlon, YEAH ME! By the end of September I won't have another race until next April....I'm glad to be done killing myself day in and day out in the pool, on the road, and on the track. I've had 6 races so far this year, all sprints, and placed AG in 4 of them. I've had two top 10 finishes and one 11th place finish OA.... My swim is down to 6:30 for a 400m race pace, my bike is at 22mph average over 10-17 miles and my run is at 20:30-21:00 over the 3.2miles. I'm feeling great and loving life, really looking forward to next year. I'll probably wait a few more years before I try a HIM, the kids will be older and I'll be a little bit better. My last two races are both olympic distances and I'm looking forward to the challenge....
Take the time to sum up your season and your goals for next but most importantly take joy in your accomplishments!!!! I'd love to hear about them...
