Legal Equipment?
I don't know if it's legal but I would be annoyed if I spent the whole swim next to someone that was beeping the whole time.

I swim at the pool with it and share a lane with others. They can't hear it at all.
I didn't know there was such a thing!
my .02 just frigging swim and leave the toys at home
according to the USAT rules doesn't exactly call it out but could be illegal cause it gives you an unfair advantage:

k. Unauthorized Equipment. No participant shall use any equipment which the Head Referee determines to be
improper, including but not limited to equipment which might provide an unfair advantage or endanger other
participants. Unless otherwise provided for in these Rules, any violation of this Section shall result in a variable
time penalty.

I see people swim with snorkels and it is legal. So a metronome I dont see why not. I put my garmin under my cap and set it to tell me if I go below a specific pace by beeping. So I guess it is the same thing, and I dont get any grief from the referee's.
One actually asked me at the start what was under my swim cap, and they thought it was a novel concept.
I see people swim with snorkels and it is legal.
Seriously!? That sounds like a huge advantage, not having to turn to breathe?
jono
used to be illlegal (without a doctors note) but think snorkels are now kosher

Thanks for the email address Joe_H.
Here is the official response from the lead ref for USAT.
"It is legal only if it is not worn under your swimcap or on your head."
That may make this device useless for me. I'll have to explore my options at the lake tomorrow.
But a Garmin under the cap is legal? I'm curious how this is different from a watch with a bunch of alarms set, from a rules point of view -- and from what I know, there aren't rules about where you can wear your watch. I'd like to hear why this is the rule.

It might fall under the no hearing impairment rule. Just a thought.
Tired is a state of mind, exhaustion is a state of body.
the itu rules and triathlon australia only state no equipment that generates propulsion or floatation. they also state no equipment that gives an unfair advantage and i think a snorkel (for some people) would be. doesnt it defeat the purpose of working hard to then not complete a swim with just a pair of speedos and goggles. isnt that part of the challenge.
the journey is the reward
sooooooo.... snorkel is legal but freaking ipod on a run is not?!?!?!?!? REALLY?!?!?!?!?!?!?
CroatiaN SensatioN
I will admit the reason the guy was using a snorkel was that his neck was fused from surgery and couldnt rotate enough to breathe. But, there just is no rule stating that it is illegal.
The Garmin under the cap is illegal. So we could wear it around our neck and not be illegal, wear it as an ear ring, and not be illegal, but under the cap. HHHHuuuhhhhhh.
I would like to now challenge the use of any speed calculating unit on the bike or for that matter, lets not mark the number of miles on the run so we can not calculate our pace, oh, sorry, we cant wear a watch as that will be an advantage, so the mile markers are useless.
And if it did fall under the "No hearing impairment rule", the swim caps should be outlawed as they impair your hearing, for that matter, take the water away, it impairs your hearing even more.
Have to admit, rather dodgy call by the USAT official....
So I tried putting it under my wetsuit (near my shoulder) and you can't hear it at all.
I suppose an ipod type armband might be helpful.
I think I just need to find a song that's the right tempo and rock out to that tune in my head for 1.2 miles on Sunday. The cadence is slow tho'. So it's not going to be too rockin'.

Can you use a tempo trainer / swim metronome in your cap during the swim?
(it's a device that beeps to give you your cadence)
