do you run your commute?
Never done it every day, but I have done a bike to, run fr, run to, bike from rotation. I bring in two sets of clothes and lunches on the bike, then leave them and the bike overnight. Run in the next morning, then ride home.
Also works better for me as it's about 6mi OW for my commute, two long to do twice a day, every day...
I've done it in the past, when I lived much closer to work. I have a locker at work, and will stock it with fresh work clothes and leave my work shoes there. For a pack, I prefer running with the smallest pack that will allow to me carry what I need to. That usually comes down to my Camelback Mule.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Just takes planning: extra clothes at work, some recovery food tucked somewhere, sometimes leave bike in my office than run in/bike home or vice-versa. Sometimes coordinate with my wife for ride home. Sometimes drive in, run home, run or ride back in next day, etc. It's definitely the way to go to squeeze some workouts in during a busy schedule, presuming you have the right distance. I'm lucky to have a good 6 mi run course or 10 mi bike ride with some climbing to make it worth my while. Also have to be safe b/c, especially in the winter, it often means being on the road in the dark and drivers are bad enough in the day. I avoid a backpack with running (though not with bike) b/c it really screws up my back.
I used to....in fact I think the only time I did it was when it snowed for the month in Dec, since we live in the same are you know what I'm talking about. I work 3.5-4 miles away from my house so it wasn't a long trek or anything. I'd run with a camelback that I'd fill up w/food for the day and a fresh pair of clothes. My work has a shower and locker rooms, so I would clean up and hang my run clothes out to dry for the run back home. I think I'll probably start doing that again soon.

thanks for the replies!
the alternate days thing might work well for me; that way i could mix things up and still have a way to carry a limited amount of clothing. i wasn't excited about the thought of driving a week's worth of clothing to work.
i saw this bag and wondered if it might work for me for the light running pack

i don't have a camelbak already, but i'm guessing what you guys are referring to is similar in size to the bag above
My commute is 23.3k by the shortest line.
I have run it (jogged it) then biked home.
but not very damned often!
(btw, I have a personal shower in my office.)
Last year during Kylie's 50k/weekl challenge I did it at least once per week.
My bodyweight plummeted during those 6 weeks, from 217 to 204lbs.
It takes a lot of time.
Sucks when it rains too.

I could run to school, but I bike it on my touring/commuting bike almost daily, never ran it even though I could once/twice a week as it's my target of 8 mile mark and just use the school gym for the shower/change.
Never rode the race bike as I'm too scared of vandalism/theft and a lock on it would look funny, but the old touring/commuter bike isn't much a prize to thieves so its like an old fat girl at a bar full young naive kids.
I'm pretty lucky I guess, plenty of time to train, just need more inspiration. My friend just did Lake Steven's 70.3 and finished sub 6, great for him and I'm so J I'm using that to inspire me now.
BTW, I use this for trail running/as a stuff sack in larger packs so its kinda duel purpose but its 12 liters so it'll haul your lunch, bare essentials....

I am only about 6 k one way from work, so I bike or run daily. I drive in everything I will need for the week on Monday. I use the CamelBack M.U.L.E. for daily essentials like wallet, lunch, swimwear, etc.

Occasionaly I will just pack everything I need for the week in a rucksack and walk it all in on Monday. Not really a workout, but gives you time to slow down and enjoy the enviroment. It works out well for me that way, as Monday is my training off day.
It's only a couple of km's from my house to school, but I try to run it as often as I can. Like JfromJacksonHole, I shower and change at the gym. I also try to use running as a way to get around as much as I can. I've done it to grab errands, go to a friends house, etc, and only when the situation is right of course. I've found run commuting to be really enjoyable.
I also use the same type of backpack as J, but maybe the size bigger. It's very secure and snug, ie. it won't bounce around at all. It fits more than it looks like it does, I can stuff in a change of cloths, small towel and small shampoo, ipod/cell/wallet, and a couple of small notebooks.

JfromJacksonHole, i like that bag
i'm guessing that, at the end of the day, this will boil down to a fit issue...whether it chafes or not, how much it bounces etc
does your pack end up needing washing after a few weeks? every week? do you ever wash it?
geeze you guys are all so close to the office.....I am 26k away, Bike in with a crappy back pack, carry change of everything and quick snack, either bike home or drive...
Definitely go for it though, it's a great way of getting a work out in.

My commute is 23.3k minimum, but I vary the route so it ranges up to 29k even 50k when I want the extra mileage.
I hate cycling with a backpack so I have a carrier rack on my commuter bike but usually I just have stuff at the office.
Bike commuting is better for the body, the wallet and the planet.

@ Tri-Ac and all else
I don't wash them enough-they do get salty in the backs.
I use them (I have an older 'Bullet' Model too/Same volume but diff model) for bike commuting mainly. My friends call them my 'Man-Purse' as I always have one on so it seems.
On a daily basis I bike 12 miles to my aquatic center/gym.
Inside with a speedo, gym clothes rolled into a gallon zip lock bag on the bottom. Then my Nike shox shoes with sox inside one each toe.
One shoe has my phone in the heel, the other has my wallet.
In the pocket is two TYR goggle cases, I have chrome googles for outside pool (Nice big 50 meter) and some clear goggles in another for the inside pool (Dreary 25 M).
Also in the pocket is my padalock-keys and my daily gu gells/cliff blocks that I ingest during my swim/gym workouts and I do a gu gel before i shower before I leave so I'm charged for the ride home/market (2-3 hours a day I spend at the Aquatic center/gym)
Its not stuffed by no means as I often pick up and stuff a bottle of wine in there on my commutes.
I ride my touring/commuter bike, not my race bikes to the gym so as I can stop @ the market on the way home, picking up groceries and such and riding the bag on the front rack. I never ride the race bikes unless I'm just riding them exclusively with no other plans/errends, no side trips.
Both have camelback blatters but I like the platupus stuff/what I use so as I drink from them on the commutes instead of the bikes water-bottles.
I just came out of retirement (job was too good to refuse, ok short lived 2 years was enough) and started biking last friday (started last Monday). I am only about 10 miles with a bike lane 90% of the way. Have a shower at a gym in the office building and just leave my towel, flipflops and shampoo etc in a locker. I did finally break down and get some paniers and a rack because I have a laptop now to cart around. I was SOOOOO excited to start riding in a to work again!
Ok, to the point. Hubby suggested I could run to work once in a while. Once I get my mileage back up I probably will but more likely bus in and run home or the reverse. My camlebak M.U.L.E has worked great for 3 Rim to Rim runs of the grand canyon so I will use that.

I can't believe I managed to live over 50 miles away from work for so long -- I love my 6 minute walk! And I deal on the days I am in the closer building and it's only 4 minutes... I don't get why you'd want to bother running for such a short distance ;)

J, you've got packing down to a science!
Brit, welcome back to 9 to 5
kylie, that's almost too close...work is going to start coming to you!

I'm considering changing my commute to running, and i'd like to hear anyone's experiences with it.
some questions:
do you have a backpack you're happy with?
how do you deal with fresh clothes for work? for the run home?
