ACL issues
I know someone who had one of the screws from his ACL surgery start backing out... Would cause him pain after running/skiing/other activities. Was able to get the screw removed and hasn't had pain since. Don't know if that is your situation...
Go see a doc/physical therapist. Could be any number of things from a tight IT band because of the pain being on the outside of the knee or it could be a structural problem with the joint.
def get it checked out. would be hard to say if its a hardware issue without knowing what hardware you have in there; without symptoms like painful popping or clicking, it's less likely to be a meniscus tear, but that knee is obviously not the same as it was before your injury, so you may have some degenerative changes happening.
you said you've had problems since surgery; what kind of problems?
Well, it "pops out" when i swing a softball bat. Apparently the twisting/driving motion of my rt knee causes it to dislocate. This happened about 6 or 7 times last year. I sit down, and push my knee towards the ground and in pops back into place (I even wear a custom fit ACL brace when I play softball). Since the surgery I have had to stay away from any dodging motion. Also, going downhill is always painfull, actually any activity that requires me to "put on the brakes". My knee has been popping and clicking for years so I completely disregard that. Ive been to the doctor and had an MRI twice since the surgery because I am completely dissatisfied with the performance of said joint. I currently have two screws holding the graft in place, one in femur and one in tibia or fibia, cant remember. I was supposed to sign up for Ironman Coeur d Alene today, after volunteering last night, but bagged it because Im not sure my knee will be up for that kind of abuse. Right now Im bummed, because I dont feel a Dr can or will do much for me. I was really hoping that all the miles Ive been logging have helped stabalize the joint, but something is definately not right. I am going to spend this week doing a lot of stretching, slow and short jogs on the treadmill and work on the stabalizer muscles around that joint.

Anyone have any experience with knee pain assiciated with an old ACL operation? Of course it could also be a damaged maniscus??? I had my ACL done about 12 years ago and have had knee problems ever since. I havent done any distance running since pre ACL operation and just started training last August. The knee has been responding to my training very well until recently. Now it gets tight when I run. A few days ago I went on my quick 4.2 mile run and had to walk most of the way home after my knee felt like it was put in a vice. I iced it and layed off the running and its felt pretty good, even during my two 30 mile rides. Tonight, out of the blue it got tight along the outer side of the knee and felt a little numb mixed with a little pain in the joint. Anyone have any ideas?? Obviously, Im gonna stay away from the running, I will ice it and stretch but what else?
