compensate for sweat during the day

I've been thinking about hydration and electrolytes a lot since the weather on the gulf coast has become even more hot and humid. With my sweat rate, I estimate that I lose 17 liters (37 pounds) during a week from sweating, assuming I did 10 hours of training. That's a lot of fluid to replace, and a lot of electrolytes leaving the body. I haven't thought as much about replacing fluids while working out, since there isn't a lot I can change from what I'm currently doing. However, I wonder if I should be doing more during the day to account for all the sweating I do.

Until now, I've made sure to take in enough water, potassium (1 to 2 bananas a day), and sodium. Lately I've been flirting with the idea of taking an electrolyte supplement like nuun. I'm not big on supplements, and if I didn't live where it's 80 at 6am with crazy humidity, I wouldn't consider it.

disclaimer: I don't work for nuun and I never used it, it's just the one that I easily found for example. :)

I found something that Cassidy Phillips (founder of TP Therapy) said about hydration interesting. He said if your pee is yellow, you need more water. If it turns a little darker (light brownish?), then you need electrolytes. I haven't resorted to holding a cup of pee to the light next to a color chart, but the idea that you can have plenty of water and still be "dehydrated" is something I don't consider often.

For you big sweaters in the hot weather, have you found anything to make a difference? Is you know of some unbiased research on what works vs what's hype?

I'm +1 on the Nuun. (waiting for Kylie now and her thoughts on Nuun)

I'm not in hot weather, but I am a very heavy sweater (during a hard 1 hr bike ride I'll drop 30-40 oz of fluid....) I've found I recover better and feel better training if I really work to stay hydrated. I don't seem to need any extra salt or electrolytes outside of my normal diet though. Unless you have a very healthy macro diet, most Americans get plenty of salt. The Banan's are probably good though.

I've used Succeed! Caps for years (14). they are capsules of bicarbonate of sodium. They make a difference for me. On really hot, humid days. (the weather here in Washington is quite like the Gulf Coast in high summer) I take one 30 minutes before my workout and one to two every hour after. They are also a buffer that neutralizes stomach acid. Beats having to suck down lots of sports drink. But...to each their own. Find what works for you.

I'll checkout and compare the Succeed vs Hammer's Endurolyes and nuun. Something has to make me feel better...

I have started using SaltStix (from a previous post about home made gels and drinks). I open one up and dump it into my water bottle and mix with malto. Now you can either take them as a caplet or dump it into the water. I like having it already there so I don't forget, dont have something else to worry about. You could drop them into your sports drink as well. You can compare them online and they do have more sodium than others and so far so good.

I'm a big fan of Nuun and Salt Stick. I'm a massive sweater, via sweat loss tests/calculators I need 24 oz an hour on regular temps (50-60 degrees) and up to 42 in the high 80s to 90s. Now any athlete know it's not feasible to consumer 42 oz of water when you run or bike, sodium is there to save the day! 340 mg per hour on light days and up to 700 per hour on hot days. When I'm done with training you could market me as a Margarita accessory :)

Sounds like I need to add SaltStix and margaritas to the list of possible solutions. Appreciate the suggestions.

I have tried the nuun, and I know people swear by it but I don't like the "fizyness" of it when I run.

I do like nuun :) However, I tend to use it mostly while training and not just during the. I have thought about adding it to my water at work though. It does have a bit of a fizz at first, but I find that it dies down as the day goes on. I don't think I've ever mixed and ran with it right away.

The amount of electrolytes you should consume varies from person to person.
I sweat pretty heavily, and lose a lot of salts/minerals. On long workout days I'll cramp if i don't get enough electrolytes. I started using Hammer enduralytes with my water and with my nutrition. It works ok mixed in with my "food", but makes the water too chalky with the amount I need.

I switched over to NUUN for my water and found that to be a nice change in flavor. But like Brittda pointed out, the fizz isn't good for my tummy on the run. Even on the bike, I don't gulp down my Nuun water. I'm still planning on using enduralytes with water though, as Nuun still doesn't have enough electrolytes for me. I'll pop a Nuun tablet or two into a glass or two of water after a sweaty workout that doesn't require me to carry water though.

My friend switched over to Succeed (and prefers it now), as it has higher concentrations of electrolytes than Enduralytes, but I haven't tried it yet.
