Right...

So I just finished reading the TriSports review of DI2 and have to question their final paragraph:

"The only down side to this gruppo is its price. To upgrade from Dura Ace 7900 is roughly $2,500.00. I will say that this is really worth it so save your money for this upgrade."

So the $2500 extra (total, $4800) to upgrade from DuraAce is justified how? The only improvements listed in the review are an auto trim FD (a properly set-up FD doesn't need this) and 30% faster shifting in the rear (so instead of 0.2 sec shifts, it only takes 0.14 sec? - estimated, but shows just how little importance that 30% is). You'll gain 0.0000000000 mph by spending the additional cash. So how is it "really worth it" to upgrade? I certainly don't see Davie Z gaining any speed and winning international TT's because he can shift from his extensions and pursuit bar (though that is the one feature that really ought to be addressed for triathletes, but I don't believe it's yet available).

no, no...you see, the way it works is...

The FD and RD not only shift the chain, they have another use. Depress button #3 on the shifter and the derailleurs go into transformer mode (see: optimus prime) and push you and your bike faster. It might be $2500's in upgrades, but I get about a 15mph boost from the DA upgrade. While you're chomping along averaging 22-24mph, I'm hauling ass at close to 40... If you think about it, that upgrade cost will be more than compensated for in increased prize money... See you at the finish line.

You are so missing the point. It's not what you make it's what you can fake! Or in this case, it isn't how you ride it's what you can buy! It doesn't matter if you're an overweight BOPer, if you can spend mad cash on a sweet ride, you invariably CAN buy speed! ;)

I just thought they meant it would be worthwhile for them if you wasted $2500 additional at their store for minimal improvement. So start saving up.

$4800 equates to the total cost of about 90% (+/-) of complete tri bikes on the market. And we're talking about SHIFTING! Talk about very, very little bang for your buck and reaching - very quickly - the point of diminishing returns. For the same $4,800, get a PowerTap, 1080/disc combo and coaching/training package (and a few massages) and you'd actually see improvement.

Throw that extra coin into the frame and wheels where it'll really make a difference and forego the E-shifting. I bet there is a slight weight penalty from the battery as well. I'm starting to see bikes with price tags hitting 15k. Impossible to justify as a non sponsored athlete.

What doesn't kill you defines you.
