How long is that pool?

I was chatting with a guy who was swim training for Ironman. He insisted the tiny little pool inside 24 Hour Fitness was 25 meters and was so exicted about his 1:45 per 100m pace that he was sure he'd go sub 1 hour. Only a few weeks away from his race, I didn't have the heart to tell him that the gym pool was probably just 25 yards. So in researching my suspicion, I found this tool that searches pools by zip code and gives you their measurement. I know, I know: y'all are so tuned in to your stroke and breath count that you can tell in one half lap if is yards or meters, but you might want to verify before you set out to break your PR:

I also found out that a pool I swim in is 22 yards. WTF? Who builds a pool that is 22 yards?

+1 on WTF?

very strange that they build pools like that.

i checked out your link, pretty cool but i don't believe the results for this one pool i use to go to, it says it 25M and I would say not, was thinking it was even short of 25 yards...

the pool I swim in regularly is 20 yds, it sucks. But I occasionally get in to a larger one and when I do it feels good to really stretch it out and cruise. I've wondered if the smaller pool was hurting my swim development. Not like I can't learn to swim in the smaller pool but sometimes I catch myself having to thinking about the turn around instead of my stroke. I'll never complain though, having a pool a couple minutes from my house is really nice.

i dont know what today will bring to me, but thats just fine.

I've been looking to see if my pool was on the site but no luck. Some people on Google said its a 25 yd pool but something tells me it's shorter. I better go to a community college and compare it to their pool. I have a feeling my fancy fitness center wasn't concerned about triathletes when building it:) But like you said Semper Tri, I can't complain, it's minutes from my house!

Yeah my pool is listed as 30m -- but that is one direction, while the 25yd direction is what we usually swim in (although it also has a 20yd section).

Oh, and it also lists a pool that was apparently demolished around 2005 or 2006...

25 meters is shortest I can tolerate, anything shorter is just turn practice.

i think my neighborhood pool is some obscure yardage like 22 or 23 yards. it was built in the 70s and is shaped like a trapezoid (the shallow end is wider than the deep in). however there are no lines on the bottom since its not really a standard sized pool so i can kind of squint my eyes and pretend its open water (since some times i look up and i'm going towards a side). i use the diving board for spotting practice lol.

yeah, I don't know how much it cost to add 3 yds to a pool but whatever. people are stupid, money is evil, and I would rather be in a lake anyway. good luck with it itty bitty pool

I was thinking about this afterwards. Not sure what that guy was thinking, but a 1:45 100me pace is not going to get him a sub 1hr IM swim, no way jose!

For my 56 min IM swim, i was doing 100yd in 1:15, going on the 1:20

Thanks for the link. I am one of the people who thought my 25 yd pool was a 25 m pool.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

I'm not sure how much I'd trust the results from that search. Around me it list three 24 hour fitness pools that were all built in the last 2 years. One lists at 25 yds, the other two at 22 yds. I've swam in all three (I've been in two of the three a couple times each in the last 2 weeks) and I end up with very similar 100 yd times...not enough to be outside normal day to day variance. I'd have to be swimming 12+ seconds faster per 100 yds for there to be a 3 yd difference - I know I'd notice that. Almost makes me want to bring a tape measure in the next time I swim.

Our lap pool was supposed to be 22 yards long, but at the time they built it a few influential swimmers at the club pitched a fit. So, since the pool is in what used to be the basement, they actually extended it UNDER the street outside, so it's 25 yards long. From the sidewalk, you can look down and watch people swim under your feet. Cool.

I would find it difficult to swim regularly in a pool shorter than 25 yards. I'm ecstatic that our outdoor pool just opened up the 50 meter lanes. Joy!

Well, I looked up my pool and it comes in at a whopping 19yds, but I already knew it was about there somewhere...lots of turning
