Front Shifter Adjustment

I was on the road this weekend and I ended up taking my bike into the shop to have them true my rear wheel.
When I went out for my next ride. I find that my front shifter must have been adjusted??
I have a double up front, so to shift down to the smaller ring I'd hit the paddle and it would drop. Now I have to click the paddle twice to get it to drop to the small ring.

I haven't been able to easily find how to fix this problem myself and I'm now 350 miles from that bike shop. I can take it to another shop but I'm always up for learning how to do these things myself.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes, this is on purpose. There will usually be multiple positions on the front derailleur for each gear. This is because if you're on a small gear on back, you'll want it more to the right, and if you're on a bigger gear, you'll want it more to the left.

If you have to click it twice, my guess is that it's because you're on one of the smaller gears on back, and therefore the chain is getting pulled more to the right.

Right, I guess I didn't mention that it also doesn't really do anything at all on the first press and it doesn't even feel right. If I push all the way in. It actually will switch twice to the "3rd position" with one press.
So getting to the situation you are describing isn't working properly either. I feel that if I'm in the big ring. I have to push much harder to get it to trigger. Something is wrong.

There are pretty much only 2 things you can adjust on your derailleurs. The limiter screws and the overall tightness of the cable. It sounds like the cable might be a little too tight. Maybe if you loosen the cable so that the first 2 clicks fall over the 2 gears, and then adjust the limiter screw so that there is no third click.

I don't know if I really understand the problem, so my advice might be totally off base and idiotic, but hopefully it helps.

Based on your description, it sounds like cable tightness (don't monkey with the limiter screws just yet). Youtube "front derailleur adjustment". Regardless of whether your front shifter mech(anism) is a bar-end shifter or STI, their functional relationship with the front derailleur depends on cable tension. Your front cable tension is controlled by the barrel adjuster. If it is cable tension, its an easy fix not worth taking to the LB$. It doesn't even require a tool, just fingers.

I think everyone's on the right track with cable tension first, low limit screw second. I'm guessing you have 105 shifters, which are made for triple-front chainrings, correct?

I doubt they're made for a triple. I have a triple, and my 105 shifters have like 5 "locations" on the front, so you can keep the chain from rubbing regardless of what gear you're on in the back. They make 105 for double and triple, so unless you've replaced your derailleur or your crank, I'm guessing it was made for a double.

I learned to do all my bike adjustments and tune ups myself when I got stationed overseas and bikes shops were not as abundant This is a link to one of the best website I have found and still use it. Good pictures and easy to follow along. This link will take procedure on how to adjust your front derailleur: http://www.jimlangley.net/wrench/ftderadjust.htm
I hope it helps.

Thanks for the link.

Now that I know what to look for, it looks like he pulled about another 1/4-1/2 inch of cable through the lock down bolt. That would be why it's so tight.
I'll take a shot at getting that back to where it should be and get it to the shop if I mess it up. I don't need any trouble at Mooseman!
