In traveling, I'm often in a position where my options are limited to fast food. I read a great tip about creating a wallet reference card with the best food options (that you like) at each restaurant you face - this way, you know what you are eating and don't have to make decisions based on heuristics.

I put the following together. If you find it useful, great. If you can improve it, even better.

Rubio’s – 2x Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos (640 Cal)
McDonald’s – Premium SW Salad w/ Grilled Chicken (320 Cal), Ice Cream Cone (150 Cal), Sausage McMuffin w/ Egg (450 Cal), Sausage Burrito (300 Cal)
Chili’s – Fajita Trio (550 Cal), Caesar Salad with Chicken (930 Cal), Guiltless Salmon (395 Cal)
Chipotle – Steak Burrito Bowl with rice, black beans, green salsa, cheese, sour cream, and lettuce (680 Cal)
Sushi – Sashimi (50 Cal), Sushi (250 Cal), Rolls (250 – 500 Cal)
Subway – 6” Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki (370 Cal) or Turkey Breast (280 Cal)
In N Out – Double Double Protein Style (570 Cal)

Yea i try and stick with the grilled chicken sandwiches w/out mayo when i do have to do the fast food thing! The regular Egg mcmuffin w/ the ham has much fewer calories and fat !Sausage is a no no in my book unless its veggie! I also travel w/ baked lays chips so i can have them w/my grilled chicken whatever instead of fries! Now coming home after a race/ traveling things may change i usually will endulge in something sinful to eat!:)

Good list....I know I have these issues too. +1 to lala2021 on the chix sandwiches....that's where I always seem to gravitate to.

Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

i learned a new word: heuristics
thanks!

good for you not caving in! i feel like i'm pre-programmed from youth to start drooling at the thought of mcdonald's [wipes mouth]...i'm good at home, but traveling does challenge you to find good places to eat

I try to stop at grocery stores and make picnic lunches when I travel. Fast food scares me and I reserve it for days when I'm in HUGE calorie deficit. Good lust though... thanks

Can I just be stupid for a moment and ask why you would have to eat so much fast food? There are plenty of sit down restaurants (that even do take out now) and like Jnrice said grocery stores to grab food at if you need something for a flight.
Yes I have traveled for work, so I do know what it's like.

There is a Fresh and Easy nearby, along with restaurants like Black Angus (where I can get grilled salmon or steak with plain potatoes).

Fresh and Easy augments a good number of my meals. I generally have fruit and clif bars for breakfast (eg today - Builder's Bar with 150 Calories worth of dark berries). McD's breakfast is saved for those mornings where its 6am and we still haven't gone to bed. Dinner is generally sushi or another restaurant.

Lunch is the worst culprit. And a lot of it is driven by the social dynamics of the group. So, not all of my meals are fast food, but enough to where I want to pay attention to what I'm ordering.

On the topic of sausage - the same article I read mentioned that the beef served is the lowest quality they can get away with serving. A friend who had a project at a meat processing plant confirmed this. I could see this holding for sausage as well. Chicken is definitely the way to go.

I BYO cereal to make sure i'm not tempted by the risky hotel breakys. When I'm staying somewhere in a few places I'll buy the essentials from a supermarket, otherwise I just stick to what I know is healthy. I tend to stick to grilled meat and salad and potatoes for restaurant dinners, this seems to do me well.

Fortunately, the hotel I'm staying at has a lot of great, healthy options for breakfast, and for the vast majority of the time I've been able to stick with reasonable choices like oatmeal, yogurt, dark berries, pineapple, bacon, etc.

That said, cereal is a great idea. A guy brought some packs of instant oatmeal and those were great snacks - maybe a bit high in sugar, but a good cereal would be a healthy substitution. Thanks for the tip.
