I'd say send an email off to someone there, and ask about it. It never hurts to ask once :) Especially since websites don't always seem to get updated as fast as the info sometimes gets out.
As for working with your family, I believe they often ask where you'd like to help out, and you can make a request. You might want to just note it, but they might not need all of you at the same place.

I figured as much...we certainly to work together, but it's worth a shot.
I volunteered for IMWI last summer, I think I committed about 2 months prior. It's a great experience. Go for the wet suit strippers as TriSooner said.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Our sunscreen appliers were in the girls changing tent and in the boys as well. Not so exciting and ewwwwwwwwwww do you want to rub suncreen on someone all sweaty?
do you want to rub suncreen on someone all sweaty?
Well, that sorta depends on who we're talking about... :-)

ahahhahahaha well I invision it being right up there with holding bikes at the porta pottys (with gloves of course).
My wife and I and a friend volunteered about 6 weeks out of IMLP last year. The closer you get to the race date the less your chances of getting the job or the aid station you want.

I actually want to be a wetsuit stripper and then catch bikes some time... I guess I just want to spend the day covered in pee! :-/

My mom and I both volunteered at IMFL this year the day or two before the race. She just indicated on her sign-up form that she wanted to be assigned wherever I was. Race day I handed out T1 bags, handed out T2 bags, did some street/intersection patrol, and handed out medals at the finish. The girls doing sunscreen work said it was pretty nasty and gross, but they were having fun with it. I had actually only signed up to work the days before the race, but once I had the Transition Volunteer t-shirt, I pretty much had free reign to work where I wanted to.
I agree with Kyliee, send one email to get a timeframe, but I also just checked the IMFL website about 1x/week until I finally saw the signup page available.
do you want to rub suncreen on someone all sweaty?
Uhm, yes. Yes, I would. I would beat down anyone who got in between me and Desiree Ficker.

Ill second that action!
My husband is going to volunteer at IMLou and we have the email address of the volunteer coordinator... but it's at home and I'm at work. I will forward it on when I get home.

This is the email for Louisville, the director of volunteers in David Buckner.
I'm racing (if you want to call it that) and my husband is going to volunteer like he did last year at IMWI. Last year he was a wetsuit stripper, a bike catcher (he caught my bike) and a finish line catcher (he caught me). He liked all the jobs but I think he like finish line catcher best.
See you there!

I didn't even have a chance to ask them...they must've seen my post ;)...I saw the positions posted the other day, but didn't realize they'd open them for registration so soon...Thanks for the heads up. Now, what do I want to do...?

So, even though IMLou doesn't sell out immediately like some of the others at this point, so it's not a requirement to register...my dad, sister, and myself (and maybe my wife and mom) are planning on volunteering at IMLou this year...and then racing it next year. It's sort of our own "right of passage" into the IM world, and we'd like to get an idea of the atmosphere as well...at least I would.
My question is...how long prior to race day do the IM's nomally start looking for volunteers?
I check the volunteer page almost weekly, and they haven't posted any poistions, and basically just say check back. I don't want to be the annoying over-excited person bothering the volunteer coordinator w/ e-mails about when I can sign up, but I don't want to be late to the party either, I'd hope that we can sign up early and get some choice in where we are on the course/what we're doing.
Also, for a small, unofficial group, like family members...how easy is it to make sure we can work together/in the same area?
