Age up rule?
You've pretty much got it covered right there. You compete in a race in April as a 34yr old and qualify for Kona bagging a 30-34AG slot. You turn 35 in July. When you show up in Hawaii, what age group are you in? By moving to the December 31st rule, there aren't any mid-year changes like that. USAT and ITU have had this for quite a while, but this is the first year that Ironman events have moved this way.
thanks for the confirmation, tamara!
i guess it also keeps you racing with the same folks over the course of a year, too
But if you have an April birthday, and you are 33 in September. So you race IM Wisconsin as a 34 year-old. Then you qualify for Kona - in the next year! So that year you are 34 and racing in the 35 age group. Are you racing in the 30-34 you qualified in, or the 35-39 you are now in?
I'd think if the real reason was to keep the championships consistent it would have to be based on your age on the day of the championship for which there are qual spots. But it would get crazy confusing.
So I don't think that rule quite fixes it... but I'm not sure exactly what it is about.

Try having you Bday on the 31st of December. You get to race with older group one year ahead of schedule. LOL>
Ky - I think that's only a problem with M-dot events where the World Championship rolls over a calendar year. I think (and I could be wrong) most local race series, ITU, etc... work on a Jan-Dec cycle so it isn't a problem.
My deal is that I've lost track of how old I am since my birthday is in December. Two years ago when I turned 34, I knew that in two weeks I'd "age up" for the upcoming 2007 race season to 35-39AG. So on my birthday people were asking me how old I was and I kept telling them "35" and then having to correct myself.
haha awesome on forgetting your own birthday :)
I don't know much about the other championships, so I'll take your word for it. But this is a new thing just adapted by Kona and it's qualifiers... so if it is a problem there, I'm still not sure why this year they finally switched their rule. I really don't care which way they do it... I'm just kinda curious (well, at least curious whenever I read this thread and it is brought to mind ;)

I was looking at the Boise 70.3 signup page, where I saw this:
"Age Up" Rule:
Starting in 2009, the Ford Ironman World Championship and all qualifying events will implement both the International Triathlon Federation and USA Triathlon’s Age Group Competition rule: All age group athletes must compete in the age group division corresponding to the athlete’s age on December 31 of the year of the event.
This rule seems very odd. Does anyone have any insight into why this rule exists?
I can only guess it stabilizes the AG's for the current year so that if you qualify for championships, you're still competing in the same group.
