Persistent pain in the back of my knees, especially when running up hill, sprints, and spinning (focusing on pulling).
Has anyone had this problem?

What did you do to fix it?
I have tried - time off from training, physical therapy - astym and others, and a cortisone shot (which worked the best but has not solved the problem).

Orthotics have been suggested, but before I try them I wanted to see if any one has some suggestions before I plunk down some more $.

Have you been checked out by a Doctor specializing in sports medicine?

Nothing to it, but to do it

I would stay away from cortisone shots but thats just me. It masks the pain thats really there, it never corrects whats really causing the pain. I would check into a PT who speciaizes in sports rehab or something of the sort. They will be able to better understand you in terms of your athletic background and what your trying to do. Good luck, and sorry to hear about the bum knee.

Thank you for your responses. I went to an orthopedist specializing in knees and 2 sports rehab/PT folks. If anyone has any suggestions for someone good in the Phoenix area, I would appreciate it. The answers so far seemed to be more rest and PT, but after about 6 months of that, I am just questioning whether there is another answer out there.

I had pain accompanied by swelling on my right knee last year. I saw my GP and he said it was bursitis. I did PT for about a 2 months and it was completely gone. The PT really laid into me for not stretching enough and not stretching properly. Since then anytime I have an issue with my knees it is always corrected by lots of stretching (2-3 times per day) and strength training for the calves and quads. Just my 2 cents.

I had back of knee pain and it turned out to be my hamstring. Lots of muscle adhesions so the muscles couldn't move right and also get nutrients/rid waste properly. A couple months of PT (ART) did the trick. I am a lot more diligent about warming up and stretching now!
