Recovery from being sick vs taper

My question to all those folks who have more experience than I do (which is a lot of you) is around what workouts I should be doing this last week before a half-iron on Sunday (11/9). I managed to catch something (still no clue what) on Friday (10/24) and have been running a fever and been rather tired since. On the plus side, the fever seems to have broke as of this morning so I'm still planning to race. I thought I was better the middle of last week so I did a 5 mile run, however the next morning I was back in the same boat.

I have no doubts that my previous training will carry me through on the distance, though I think I may be changing my goal times a little. The question is what should my training look like this week (i.e. balancing continued recovery from whatever I had with getting muscles loose and shaking a little rust off). I've pretty much decided against morning workouts since that will be a huge sleep robber, but I'm thinking along the lines of an hour trainer ride one night, a 1500 meter swim another, and about 20 or so minute run at recovery intesity.

I'd appreciate anyones feedback. I know the decision is mine but I'm looking for input to help make that decision. Thanks for the input.

If you wanna go...lay low. Illness is quite common during a taper. How you recover from that illness takes smarts. As I am sure you know, at this point, NOTHING you do will improve fitness, but over doing it can shove you back down into your boots and bring the illness back to the forefront.
The plan you have sounds good. Skip the mornings, sleep, eat right, and do the three workouts you have planned...but I'll add a bit. If during those workouts you aren't feeling right, STOP. Getting to the start line feeling good is everything. Getting in one more workout is nothing.
Best of luck, and let us know how it goes!

I agree with everything Anton said. PLay it smart, lay low, shake the rust out nice and slow but dont go crazy and get sick again. Sleep, eat, and be happy. Your fitness to this point will not suffer as much as your worried about so keep positive and be smart about your meals and exercise this week. Good luck this weekend, cant wait for the report!

Doing nothing and getting better will have bigger race-day payoffs than the (minimal) benefits of roughly two hours of training you have lined up and staying sick.

It is better to be undertrained than overtrained.
If you miss a few workouts in the last couple of weeks to rest and get well,
it will be be better that getting in those workouts and staying sick.

Rest and nutrition are just as important as SBR.

Get well, and good luck. ;-)

Thanks for the advice. Just to clarify, I'm not really worried about needing more training. My only real reason to try and fit in any training this week is so that I'm not stiff/sore when I get out on the course on Sunday after doing little to nothing for 2 weeks. Anything I plan on doing this week is going to be low intensity - just get the muscles loose. Then again, I've never had this extreme of a taper before, maybe it'll be better than previous races.
