Surprisingly, it was still open around late morning or early afternoon today. And to think I almost had a panic attack yesterday frantically trying to sign in to active. I guess with Cozumel added and Arizona moved to November, the supply of very late season races is catching up to the demand.
I'm not surprised at all that it's still open. I think a lot of people are tired of the draft fests out there.

Never heard this before. Please explain.

Load of people drafting.. although I really doubt that is it. Wouldn't keep me from registering. Probably more to do with 1. economy and travel cost 2. proximity in time to Arizona and Cozumel 3. popularity--if I recall this one didn't sell out right away last year either.
I know this is off topic from original question. I haven’t done an IM yet, and I am looking for this to be my first in 2010. Any reason why there is so much drafting in this one? Is different to the other IM’s?

Having done three IMs - but none in Florida - my guess would be that the bike course if so flat it makes it easier to find a group and pace off of them. I don't know that Florida is a draft fest, but from stage races I've done, it is easier for the peleton to stick together on long flats. Once the course goes vertical, everyone gets strung out. Again, all conjecture re: Florida.
And why did it stay open so long, relatively speaking? I think the aforementioned posts are correct: economy ($525 is a nice little chunk) and other late-season options (RedMan, Great Flordian, ChesapeakeMan, Beach to Battleship, Silverman, and Arizona), all within a month or so of Florida. Supply has caught up with demand.

take a look at the forum on ST...lotta bitching about it [then again, that happens a lot over there]

I checked out the ST forum. Is it really that bad? Although I have quite awhile to make awhile make a decision, I am more inclined to choose another race because of this. Any thoughts?
It happens in every race. I think like TriSooner said it probably is just easier on an extremely flat course. They do it at IMC too, just harder up all the hills :)
Just do YOUR race, it's all you can do. Who cares what others do? They will be the ones to suffer in the end. Its like the other recent post about AG's using drugs ("Drug testing at IM for ag") to get a head. There is nothing you can do about it other than to do your own race.
I haven't done the race, but don't let ST make your decision for you
You can avoid the drafting. That's up to you and you alone. Think about why YOU're interested in that race in the first place and see if those are real draws FOR YOU; or whether there's a more compelling race someplace else. That's really generic advice, I know, but everyone gets different things out of each race.

It IS that bad. I would not register for Florida again for that very reason. I was run off the road by a peloton of at least 90+ drafters, literally forced off of the shoulder. Race officials came by on motorcycles and did absolutely nothing. For someone who is in contention to place in their age group or looking for a Kona slot, it would be a no-go unless you wanted to join the drafters. You just lose too many places to people whizzing by in the huge pelotons.
I think it's the combination of the flat course, allowing masses to congregate, and race officials who despite talking at the pre-race banquet about "getting tough" on drafters do nothing. Going by the penalty tents, they were all empty. If they just tagged a few out of each group, the groups would break up.
In a race that big, it's inevitable that you might get a little clustered up trying to pass with so many bikes on the course, but there's no excuse for people riding 2 inches from each others wheels in big obvious drafting packs.

Does anybody know how fast IMFL 2009 sold out? I am looking to sign up next year for the 2010 race. Trying to figure out if I need a “backup” IM and attempt to go onsite.
