Dizzy after swim
Was the water especially cold? I've only had this happen in very cold water when swimming without my neoprene cap. I figured it was my ears getting cold inside that messed with my balance.

How long was the swim? This happens to me after a long pool w.o. I will feel a liitle light headed and off balance for a little while. I was thinking that it could be improper breathing,
lack of oxygen in other words!Good ?
I think this is pretty common, but not lasting several minutes. I usually notice a moment of dizziness upon exiting the water but only a few seconds.
I suppose it depends on how long the swim is but I've heard this phenomenon, which is fairly common, to be attributed to the fact that you swim in a prone position. You're heart doesn't have to pump as hard to get your blood flowing around body since you're flat. Once you finish though, you sprint up the beach/pier and suddenly not only is your body screaming for more oxygen, you're heart has to work twice as hard to just keep the blood flowing up and down your legs. You're blood pressure suddenly drops and you get dizzy, confused, sluggish, etc.
Personally, I treat this as if I were hyperventilating. Slow down, take deep slow breaths and put your head between your knees if you really need to.
If you find you are especially sensitive to this, I'd recommend training in more race specific situations.

... or ease off the throttle at the end of the swim and let your heart catch up. If I understand you correctly the problem sounds like when a person "stands up to fast", right? Stephen is right, that's a blood flow issue, so being anaerobic in a prone position might be causing your heart to not be able to keep up with your burly self when you stand up. If you have to slow down the swim right at the end to let your body get ready for the transition and you loose 15-20 seconds but keep your head clear you're still ahead 1 min 40 sec of your previous transition right?
I had this same problem and wearing earplugs helped me out a bunch. You'll always have the problem with going from horizontal to vertical, but keeping cold water out of my ears seemed to take care of 90% of the dizziness.

goggles too tight? I loosened mine up a bit and that knocked about half the time off my dizzy spell. the remaining time I attribute to what others have mentioned - vertical to upright too quickly. pausing before getting out of the water was a big help in that respect.

Are you bilateral breathing? This happens to me when I only breathe on one side for an extended period of time.

I get a dizzy feeling whenever i swim more than 30min.. Mine is usually gone by the time i reach my towel, but i think there is something to laying off the throttle a little. I always try to fininsh strong and I think the bump in HR might prolong my fog. Funny side note, I swam an hour yesterday which is my longest swim, and towards the end i was trying to figure out what distance i had covered. i knew how many laps, but no matter how i tried to do the math,, nothing.. couldn't do it.. 50 yards a lap. 5280ft in a mile. 3 feet in a yard. nothing.. hilarious to me in the pool. But it made the point evident that my brain wasn't my bodys main concern.
I'm definitely PRO ear plugs. It's helped me a lot.








Any recommendations on how to stop being so dizzy after the swim. When I get out of the water, I cannot focus, everything is moving. It takes a couple of minutes to refocus but I seem to be about a 4 minute transition to the bike, with 2 of those minutes just trying to get my head cleared. My last triathlon, thank goodness there was a railing when I got of the water to hold onto. I stood there for 5 seconds until my wife yelled 'RUN' and then I sorta wobbled to the bike area.
