Muscle soreness and HEADACHES!
I'll have to look into veggies and fruits, but I know that black tea and green tea fight inflammation. While that info has been around for years I've just seen several pieces on it recently...one study from Rutgers University.

fish oil, or that's at least what my massage therapist says.

+1 on that. Plus lots of water can also help flush out the inflammation.

+1 and have you tried and ice bath or at least icing up the inflamed areas?
Nothing to it, but to do it

+1 and a post ride beer, keeps you relaxed and the blood flowing. Works best if your with a bunch of other riders in spandex at your local bar/pub/garage/road side.
Your headaches make me wonder if you're losing too many electrolytes (I swear...that's my answer to everything!).
As for the muscle aches, some info from Wilkipedia: "The greatest myth is that lactic acid is the cause of the stiffness felt after an event such as a marathon. Stiffness is due mostly to damage to the muscle, and not an accumulation of lactic acid or lactic acid crystals in the muscle."

I have a great blend of fish oil, I'll have to take it 3 times a day like recommended. Beer....hmmm? A physical therapist told me that beer is the best alcoholic beverage because of the electrolytes.
I have two HUGE ice packs that I use regularly. I can jump into a freezing pool, but an ice bath? REally?!? My issue covers the entire trap area, and extends up into the neck and head. I was in a motorcycle collision 1.5 years ago (35mph to dead stop instantly). Obviously I have some issues still, but it's the inflammation that kills me. I can feel it. It doesn't even hurt immediately, but I know the pain is coming.
I'll definitely add some green and black tea into my diet. Looks like I'm doing a lot right already... just need to keep fighting.
Thanks everyone.

I use an Ice bath on my legs after long runs. Several other posters do this as well. It might be helpful to do this up to your neck, but I personally struggle with getting into the bath up to crotch level. Ice packs are probably a good idea.

looks like Star and I agree, it's always the electrolytes. Also, if it's your neck and into your back consider your body geometry on your bike. If your wrenching on your neck to see down the road yeah you'll hurt after a few hours of spinning.
Speaking of fish oil, does that stuff give anyone else the nastiest burps ever? I tried it a few years ago and it might have just been the brand I got (don't know what it was anymore) but it was crazy!

Yeah, fish oil just tends to make you feel like you have a fish farm in your stomach. I used to take Herbalife's brand, Herbalifeline I think, and they added a lemon flavor to it.... burps tasted like fish swimming in diluted lemon juice! Nasty.
As athletes, we eat to fuel our bodies, not cater to our senses right.
I use the Costco brand.. No fish burps here. I think it depends on how they filter it when they make them.

High-quality fish oil and ice baths are great for recovery, but the best thing I've found to reduce soreness for myself and the athletes I train is a high branched-chain amino acid dose immediately after training. This alone practically eliminates all training-related soreness.
Unless you're dehydrated, additional water and/or electrolytes beyond what you need to rehydrate won't be of help after training.

I'm new to the tri/cycling world, but I'm not new to muscle soreness and headaches.
I power-lift to minimize soreness from strength training, but cannot beat inflammation.
Anyone have any diet/nutrition tips for fighting inflammation? I get TONS of antioxidants and alkaline water and eat 90% organic diet.
Are there certain vegetables that promote inflammation? Fight inflammation?
