Anyone been drawn for the Ironman out of it? Is there a entry fee if you get drawn to compete in Kona? I was on-line this last weekend watching the race and just saw on their site that they were accepting applications for it now. I was just curious. Thanks all.......

You have to pay to enter the lottery, then if your name is drawn you pay what ever the entry fee is --not sure what it is but IMC was just $575 so I would assume in that range.

I have not entered it. A friend from my tri club had his name drawn this year after several years of trying. In addition to the lottery fee and the race entry fee, he also had to finish a half-ironman within a certain amount of time (I think it's 7.5 or 8 hours, very doable) this year to validate his Kona spot. He could pick any half-iron race, not just the $$$ Ironman 70.3 series.

+1, and I know macker got a lottery slot this year, still waiting for a RR though, hopefully they're still relaxing in Hawaii at the moment. So it is possible to win one.

It's like $200 for the lottery entry and then the entry fee if you get chosen

As part of the lottery process, Ironman in 1990 established the Passport Club in the United States. This year the Passport Club has been opened to all athletes worldwide. The Passport Club offers many benefits including increasing your chances to be selected through the lottery.

There will be 150 lottery slots available to the U.S. applicants. I tried it for the year we were hoping to be there for the race (as Mike was looking at qualifying). I didn't get it, but I figured it was worth trying. We were there, so it wasn't like I'd have to pay for a whole Hawaii trip just to race.

The cost to enter the lottery is relatively small..but what adds up is if you do get in....but after just doing it, I would say its all worth it! Posted a race report (a long one) a few minutes ago.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay for a trip to Hawaii to just race The Ironman :) I know that's not what you meant. I had to go back and read your post a few times ("Oh, she was already in Hawaii . . ."). I'd be tickled pink to fly in Friday and fly out Monday. I wouldn't care less if I saw or did anything else.

And BTW, does anyone know what the odds are for a lottery pick? Even approximate odds? I know how many are chosen, but how many apply?

Actually, I am torn on if I'd make the trip "just" to race if I didn't qualify. I don't care what other people do, but for me to have not qualified makes it just like any other IM sorta, and then I'm not sure it would be worth how $$ that trip can be (if that makes any sense) :)

Well I would do it "just to race". Since I have -0- interest in Hawaii it would be the only time I go :)
I won't however enter the lottery---want to earn it but that is a different topic all on it's own. In the mean time I will spend my "sunny" vacations at our place in Belize.

rough odds from what i read from last years lottery (from google dont know how accurate any of these figures are, and i would have thought that there were more so this maybe totally wrong)

So i have a 1 in 140 chance at getting in....

last seasons odds:
3000 apply from US
3000-4000 apply from the rest of the world

INTERNATIONAL ATHLETES

There are 50 lottery slots available to International applicants. CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES WILL NOT BE ENTERED. 25 names will be drawn from the Passport Club. 25 names will be drawn from the International Applicants and any unselected Passport Club members.

Thanks macker and congrats.
I new about the reasonable fee of the lottery, just wasn't sure about the entry fee for the IMWC which others answered. Sounds like your race was a success. Thanks for all the great replies......

You know what would be cool macker is an actual rundown of expenses for winning a spot via the lottery. Something that included the lottery fee, cost of admission, cost of another qualifying event, airfare to the island, hotel for 3-4 days, that must have T-shirt, etc... I bet it adds up in a hurry!
