Not exactly where I want to be for my first mary coming up.

I was thinking of taking some tylenol before the race to ease my certain struggle. Thoughts?

Tylenol 8 hour?
I've done it..it helps mitigate some of the little aches and pains. Best part is that it doesn't have the same bad effects that NSAIDS (Ibuprofen) cam have on your liver.
If you have a chance to try it before your race, do so...if not, oh well. Make sure you take it with breakfast on race day.

+1000 I take 800mg race morning and another 400mg at mile 15. If anything the placebo effect definitely makes a difference.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

I always thought that tylenol was the pain reliever that ruined your liver? I take 800mg IBP
2 hours b/f a long run or race and it seems to help.

OOps...sorry meant Kidney Problems...
Here is a good article , although lengthy, about NSAIDS and endurance exercise.

Thanks for the advice. I only have a short, easy run left, but I'll try it before that.

If you think about it, send me some mojo on Saturday morning, 8 EST!

Good thing is it's supposed to be around 60F.

I agree. Try it in training first. You shouldn't suffer any stomach issues if you take it with an enrgy bar, banana, etc....

I have done the tylenol 8 hour on many a marathon morning.
I can have issues with my knee and it takes the edge off.

Of course if the race has an 'unofficial' beer aide station somewhere after mile 18, that helps too!! ;-)

Nothing to it, but to do it

I'm only doing a long bike ride on Saturday so I'll send you my left over mojo...

ONLY on race day. My 'cocktail': 2 Advil + 2 Excedrin. I also consume on a regular basis about a gallon of water (a quart of it with Electrolyte additive) daily.
The basic rule of thumb I have heard about NSAID's is that if you are peeing brown, you are taking wayyy too much and probably too frequently.

cheers

if you're peeing brown, you have already overtaxed your system...the brown color is what your kidney is NOT cleaning out...very bad...next step: renal failure, anyone? [maybe a little extreme, but not out of the question]

Anton that article took a long time to read but was well worth the read. I had read several articles talking about hyponatremia and just could figure out how someone could drink too much water. The fact that kidney function is reduced >60% when you are running was an eye opener. That's good when you don't want to stop to pee but bad if it's a cool day and you're not sweating (but drinking as if you were).

They also highlighted diuretics the day before a race. Beer and coffee come to mind. I realize they meant for people with hypertension but beer and coffee would do the trick too. Too much caffeine on race day too.

I printed the article out so I could go through it a couple of times. I realize this was a journal article but it was seriously thick. I had to keep going back to make sure I got it all.

Thanks for the link!
