Pro 3 Race + rain = ouch.
Dang, 12 MPH is pretty darn slow for a skid out. I'm glad you're OK. What was your PSI? Any wet leaves or anything in the road?
We were out in the rain yesterday as well. I was on PR2s, wife was using PR3s. No issues, but there was leaf debris all over the roads and we were going very slow.
my only question is, where on earth did you find a 3/4 mile climb at 12-15% grade in chicago? were you trying to ride your bike up stairs?
North of the city off Sheridan. Technically, the road is off limits to cyclists but I figure if I maintain the speed limit of 20 mph on the climb, nobody has any right to tell me to get out of the way.
The road was clear, just wet. I might have been moving a bit faster than that, but it seemed like I was easing into it. I was concentrating more on downshifting for the climb back up than braking. Weight firmly planted on the outside pedal. Just lost the back end. I'll normally take the same corner around 25-30 and I know I was under 15. PSI on the rear was 105 (I normally run around 130). I had the same problem with wet leaves everywhere on forest preserve trails on my way back. Just taking corners really easy and accelerating on the straights. Treated the last half of the ride like a crit.
Hmmm. It's not the PSI, that sounds about right for the rain.
You mentioned before that your rear brake was locked up after the crash. Could it have locked up beforehand and caused you to skid?
pro 2 = 200km one small piece of glass ripped the tyre to pieces,
bah waste of money.
it was a real small piece of glass too.
Gatorskins are great up to 8000/9000km !!!
I've crashed kind of like that before when wet leave have stuck to the wheel and jammed up my rear break.
I don't know if I'm just lucky, but I have 5000 miles on my Specialized Armadillos without a single flat...

I have a pair of these on my training wheels because they were dirt cheap and matched my bike color ($45 on ebay for the dark blues). Went out for a nice calm 50 mile yesterday in the rain and immediately wished I still had my giro twix tubies (the rear is in the shop with a trashed hub). Sliding all over the place on corners but managed to hang on through 25 miles. Then, after a controlled descent, I hit a 15 mph switchback to kick me straight into a 3/4 mile climb at 12-15%. I didn't make it to the start of the climb. Took the corner at 12 mph and the back end went a sailing. Wee!! I slid about 70ft across the road on my butt and into a crash barrier on my Kestrel. Check out the damage: not a scratch on the bike, only minor scuffs on the tops of my hoods, a locked rear brake and a bit of rash on the saddle. Tiny hole in the shorts, a couple minor tears in the vest, but the rest of the gear is spotless. Gaping hole in the knee that oozing still a day later and a bruised ankle. Seriously? This is it? Nice. Go pee and hop back on the bike. Crank away at +/-500 watts up the hill and finish my ride. The blood mixed with dirt and rain water running down your leg just makes you look like you're so much crazier than simply wearing bright spandex and a showy helmet.
Moral: don't take out pro 3's in the rain. Unless your route doesn't turn. Then I suppose you're alright. Wish I had my giro twix tubies back from the shop.
