Kona here I come... (as a spectator)
Oooh have fun! I was there cheering last year, and it was a really cool experience.
There is a sandwich at the Royal Kona (at the bar area) that is AMAZING -- I think it was tuna? Of course I'm not remembering now... but it is a seared one and sooo fresh and mmmm.
After the race we did a hike/walk day at Volcanoes National Park which was interesting. There were some areas for viewing there that we didn't get to see -- some depends on if the volcanic activity is going on, but seeing where lava hits water is supposedly an amazing site.
I always enjoy seeing pictures from all the parts! Can't wait to see how your trip goes :)
Honu Divers - We did the Manta Snorkel and it was a blast. There were 5 rays. DId the year before and it was amazing, but this year we saw Big Bertha. Always a nice trip.
Desiree Ficker please =)
Oh yeah!
I wasn't sure if she made it in or not but I checked the list and she's listed. Will work on that!

Hey there,
I am going to race, as a lottery winner....so while not the way most of us would probably want to get there, I am excited all the same...In the process, I also raised over 11,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation...figured I had to use my good fortune for a greater good....so getting nervous/excited etc...maybe I will see you/meet you there....my bib is 1287....and I will be the slowest 35-39 age group male, or very close to it..but also the happiest and luckiest one as well....~macker

i'll be there. but flying over just to watch the race, too expensive to stay longer. so, flying in friday and out monday. should be a good race tho, looking forward to it.
WOW macker, that's cool about raising $11,000, good job! Don't worry or think about being the slowest, think POSITIVE.
I'll keep an eye out for you guys. I'll be sporting shirts with either TRIjuice or TRImapper on them. You might actually miss me. See, I won't be the female with the t-shirts or tank top on, I'll be the guy next to her... 8-) My friend is coming to watch the race too and she has agreed to wear some of my logos.

hay, i live in kona and there are a ton of things to do here! swimming w/ the dolphins is great as was mentioned but can be a little spendy (400$ a person). there are great snorkel boat like Fairwind that is 50% off till IM. i work on the boat and i'll telll you its a great deal for 50 something bucks.
for places to eat, i love sushi en fuego or "you make the roll" for the sushi thing but if your looking for something on the cooked side, Paleos is great place thats right near the pier, and la burgone ( don't quote me on the spelling) is a great french joint on the Queen K.
shoot me any questions u may have i'd be happy to let you in on some local spots to all fellow tri junkies.
aloha.
Thanks TriNick. I am very excited about the money i was able to raise...makes it a much different experience. It was the first time i attempted to raise money and it turned out to be a very positive thing for me, and those who contributed. As for the race..I am going into it with just the goal of having fun, enjoying the race, doing my best and smiling as much as i can...while we all have goal times in our head, i am smart enough not to put too much pressure on myself....thanks again, and I will look out for you...will be in as much yellow as i can to support LAF....:-)

I am a MOP triathlete so I am hoping to get to Kona by lottery someday too.
Awesome job raising the $$ for charity!!
It will help you get thru the tought times knowing you are doing it for a cause.
Good luck!!
Nothing to it, but to do it
The ocean, volcanoes, rain forests, beaches, snow capped mountain (maybe), best coffee in the world.... I think you'll find plenty to do....

So late last week I overheard my coworkers talking about a business trip to Hawaii. I heard the word Kona and was over in their cube in an instant. Turns out they were going to be in Kona this weekend (with no planned work) and DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THE IRONMAN WAS HAPPENING! I immediately started trying to figure out ways to convince my boss that I needed to help on this project (hey boss, I need to help these guys out because, hey, it's Hawaii and the Ironman is this weekend and I'm into triathlons so I'll be able to help keep them from running over people on the road). Nothing good came to mind.
If they come back without pictures I'm going to roast them on a spit.
Hope you have fun Nick!
Good luck macker.
Sooo... how was the trip?

It was a great experince. Hanging around the pro's and chit-chatting with them, seeing and talking to normal joe's like us (age groupers). Highlights include talking to 3 of the original Ironman participants / finishers John Collins, Tom Knoll and Henry Forrest. Hearing some of the things they said about that race 30 years ago is amazing.
Race day was long, but well worth it. I was trying to document as it transpired but it was difficult at times. There are some race pictures there.

Nice. I think Craig Alexander is the most photogenic winner since Dave Scott, even including Dave Scott. How can the sponsors not want this guy as their icon?

maybe one day it will be to race (yeah, I'll probably be over 70 yrs old) but I'm content right now being a spectator...
besides some R&R i'll be there to covering the race for TRIjuice, so keep an eye out for that... any suggestions on what you might want to see covered?
just wondering what might be a good pre / post race activity to do excursion wise? sounds like some friends are lining up a swim with the dolphins but that's about it. also any recommendations on places to eat? what else should i think about.
tribro are you going?
