How far do you guys/girls travel for a race? How often, etc. I'm trapped in an area with very few races (in my opinion). The nearest 1/2 IM is about 300 miles away and the nearest IM is about 400 which isn't that bad but there are also only about a half dozen Oly's in the area as well. It doesn't give much choice in which races you want to do. Am I just being overly sensitive?

We only do a couple big races a year, so for big ones we often are willing to travel.

There is one half IM that is about a 1.5-2hr drive that we have done, and supposedly a couple other halfs within 3-4 hours. For half IMs that are focus races, we have driven 7ish hours, or flown from Southern CA to Toronto.

For full IMs, there are a couple indy races 3ish hours away and 7ish hours away, and there is an Mdot about 5 hours away. But for an IM, it's such a bit experience and trip and factor anyways that we've also flown for them (Southern CA to Louisville KY, or to Kona).

Races of those distances are just limited, and often do require some amount of travel. Even here, which is said to have TONS of races, those distances are just not as accessible all the time.

For olympics and shorter, we do have a number of races in the area (within 2 hour drive), but we haven't done as many of those lately so I'm not sure how many.

I am very fortunate that there are a lot of tri's within 100 miles of me and even several under 50 miles. Sprint, Oly and 1/2 IM. I have to go about 200 to get to a Full 140.6 race.

I have gone as far as IM FL which was over 1400 miles, and I drove, 4 days before the race.

Living in Madison and having plenty of tris in the Midwest I do not need to go very far. But when I was looking to do an IM i decided on IMKY over IMFL because I can drive and do not need to ship my bike.

The farthest I've travelled is about 5 hrs driving for an Oly in Chicago, more as a destination tri. I am not to the IMs yet, but will probably do Lou first since it's within 1.5 hrs from me. However, for future IMs I'd travel just since it's a whole package experience thing I think.

There are plenty of smaller, indy HIMs within 2-3 hrs if you want to do them, but next season I'm travelling 5hrs and 9hrs (all driving) for the 2 70.3s I have on the schedule.

As for sprints and olys...they are in abundance w/in a couple hours since Indianapolis, Columbus (OH), Louisville, and Cincinnati are all within 2 hrs from my house.

I consider the travel as part of the race fun! So we've been to IM Germany and IM Austria. This year we went to ultramarathons in North Carolina and Vermont. Next year it's IM Switzerland. (Oh the joys of being childfree!). My longest drive is around 5 hours for a HIM. And you're right, there aren't many Olys out there.

I've flown 10,000 miles round trip. For IM races, I'll happily travel, and have done so from Dallas to Madison, Coeur d'Alene, and Frankfurt. Next season I'm shooting for races in New Mexico, Tennessee, Colorado, and Mexico. I use my vacation time accrued at work to travel to races.

Sounds like I just need to find a way to fund the traveling that I need to do to race.

You provide a compelling reason why the interest in IM racing may wane a bit during these challenging economic times. Travel costs are making it increasingly difficult for many athletes to do races they otherwise would have in previous years. Sounds like you need to get creative... pool travel costs, find sponsors, race for a charitable foundation, etc... Best of luck..
