Energy Bars
I like Clif bars and Detour bars an the occasional Power Bar.
I don't eat them every day or every week.
I think it is best to get your nutrition from regular heathly foods and use the energy/supplement bars onec in awhile.
Nothing to it, but to do it
for spring training for crew i would start every morning (445am) with a powerbar before we left for the pre-row run.
if you intend on following the bar with exercise i would say go for something in the 200-300 cal range such as powerbar or balance bar. if you are going to eat the bar and workout later in the day, i would opt for something slightly lower in cals and higher in fiber such as a zone bar (theyre delicious. they gave them to all competitors at last year's head of the charles).
thats my .02
I like Clif Bars, but I haven't tried a ton of others.
Clif because they sell them at Costco. I probably eat two per week.
Clif bars are probably the best all around. Tons of flavors compressed into a tiny block that takes me anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to eat. I only use them when I'm in a pinch for post-workout or between-meal nutrition - maybe 3 or 4 a week. They're pretty tolerable for active bodies, but definitely try out any bar/supplement as you would use it during racing and training. A lot of these bars are fine to eat while you're slumped on the couch or sitting at your desk, but they can give you tons of digestive grief once you become active.
I would like to eat them more often than I do, especially right after a long workout, just to be able to restore the fuel depots right after exercise. Especially if it's a couple of hours before dinner, because I'm always hungry.
However, if I ate them every time I was hungry I would not have a bike, and I would live in a box on the street, they are simply too expensive for everyday use in my opinion. Maybe, when I'm done with college or I win in Lotto, I'll eat more of them as a nutritional addition, but I agree with the person who said it's better to eat real food.
I go with Cliff, Lara Bars and Power Bars. I only eat them when I don't have the time to get real food- maybe 1-2 times a week OR if I'm on 3+ hour bike ride.

+1... :) I'm not price sensitive, I'm just cheap. :)

+1 on CLIF. I'm a big fan of the MOJO bars for a quick snack on the go.

Who has time to eat real food?
I'd say Cliff or Balance bars
Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Problem is 2 of the 3 flavors in the Costco box are ishy(I only like the pb in that box)... Trader Joes has them and singles are as cheap with a much bigger flavor vairety.

You have to make time.
Go shopping, get some fruit, get some veggies, get some good food.
Get in the habit now.
Nothing to it, but to do it
lots of the energy bars are similar.
what you LIKE is very important. during the ironman some of the ones they handed out almost made me puke. even more so with gels.......some of them simply disgust me. I was at about halfway point in the run and i had this coffee mocha gel and i almost threw up. hehe.
stick with what tastes good to you.
I generally use Clif bars on long (3+ hours) bike rides. I prefer the "mini" Clif bars over the full-size ones...just a preference with me. BUT...if I had to choose on taste alone, it would have to be Honey Stinger Energy bars...HANDS DOWN, they are the best tasting bars out there. Don't believe me? Just try one for yourself. My favorite is the Peanut Butter 'N Honey flavor. My hubby is partial to the Rocket Chocolate flavor.

Also, there are plenty of recipes you can find online to make your own energy bars.

I have them, but only eat them for long workouts and on race day...+1 to real food
They are new, and expensive, but I've recently begun using FINiBAR with good success. They taste good and work better than the PowerBar and Cliff products that I had been using. They seem to be easier on my stomach and don't cause energy fluctuations like most other products I've tried.
The company was giving out samples at an event in CO recently, so I was able to grab a handful to try before buying :)
Real food does rule, but with my schedule it's nice to be able to grab and go. I also like having something wrapped that doesn't get trashed while on the run or bike.
3 to 4 days per week I use a clif bar as breakfast. maybe couple it with a banana and a glass of milk. I buy them usually at least by the dozen so I pay a dollar or less per bar. Figure a banana runs around $0.69... combined with a glass of milk I'm looking at less than $2.00 for breakfast - anyone who is price sensitive should be able to appreciate that.
Often times, if I have to go into the office, I take one shortly before lunch - around 11:00 - then if I eat lunch out (which can be a regular part of my job at times), I'm not as hungry and eat a healthier lunch. Or bring two and they will hold me over until a pre-work out dinner at 3:00 or 4:00.
