No food on racing morning?

Hello,

I was curious if anybody doesn't eat anything before a sprint on race morning. In the past I have nibbled on a cliff bar while driving to race site and then have a gu a little before the race start. On a few races I have stomach cramps on the bike leg and burping quite a bit. So I am considering just drinking water before and during the race, I might take some gatoraide on the bike instead. Waking up early around 5am usually gives me a tender stomach, but waking up around 9am I seem fine. Or wondering if I could eat something that settles my stomach in morning would be great.

I tried a banana this morning and gu and it wasn't as bad.

Any thoughts or previous experiences would be helpful,

Thanks

I would say to always put somthing in your stomach. Its mostly trial and error to just find what works for you. Or find foods that you can eat after youve been awake for an hour or so that wont brick up in your stomach but will still give you some nutrition. Just my $.02

The important thing is to figure out what works for you, then tweak and repeat if necessary. I get lotsa laughs because my favorite pre-race breakfast is glazed Krispy Kreme donuts. I've also done Frosty Flakes and McDonald's sausage and cheese biscuits :)

When you wake up in the morning, your body has not eaten for 6-12 hours, and therefore has depleted some of its energy stores while you have slept. You certainly need to eat something before the race. Most peeps I know suggest something like 2 hours before the race. Try easy to digest high energy food that will be gentle on your stomach.

and keep trying stuff until you figure it out. It's OK to throw up during a race or three :) You have a lifetime of tri-ing ahead of you!

Wow, I couldn't eat that no matter what day of week much less a race day, except maybe the Crispy Cream. I thinking half a banana and a half a bagel when I leave the house.

I have seen people eating glazed donuts before marathons and tris. I love them, but not before a race. I go with a plain bagel and some multi grain cheerios. A Cliff Bar if my stomach isn't filled with butterflies.

I don't eat unless its 3-4 hours before a race...and then it's Hammer Sustained Energy (liquid). I don't eat before workouts either, but start fueling 15-20 minutes into the session. It works for me. But I know people who eat a big breakfast before training or a race. Trial and error is how you find what works for you.

FOWWFY (Find out what works for you) I have to have my regular nosh before a race....any race.
Bagel with jam and PB and tea. If it's a sprint...I just make sure it's 3 hours before.

I like to have something to eat a couple hours before race, but I have woken up late for a race and did the sprint on a few sips of gatorade.

I was fine but I was hungry when I finished.

Nothing to it, but to do it

I can't do any workout in the morning without eating. I have tried this about 3 times and had horrible workouts. For me a bagel and a glass of juice work great.

+1 on bananas and fruit

Fruit usually helps tie me over before the race if its early in the morning but if the race isn't until later in the morning defiantly get some carbs

I eat a PB &J and a glass of chocolate milk in the morning before races or any non running workout. I then down a gel before heading to the start line.

My suggstion to you- wake up a little earlier and eat MORE. I bet have bread in your stomach will help reduce acid and definately increase performance. Not eating in the morning is like not putting gas in your car before leaving on a long drive. Not smart.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

depends on the distance of race for me.

i usually start to micromanage my meals about a week out from a race. generally i race at the olympic distance for tris or around marathon distance for trail races, although in the fall/winter i focus on shorter races.

my pre-race day-of breakfast is a bowl of honey nut cheerios, banana, one cup of coffee, one cup of oj.

after my warm-up and stretch i usually have a granola bar or powergel just prior to the event - along with water.

this works for me. the best thing is just to tinker on your long run days, or on days where you do bricks or swim to bike transitions.

i'd rather go in a little full than have to make up a caloric deficit and bonk early.

I just completed my second sprint tri last weekend so take this for what its worth. I am hypoglycemic (low blood sugar- polar opposite of diabetic) and because of this I practice for and did the event on an empty stomach. The practice is require to train your body to burn fat when you start to use up the more readily available glycogen stores in your muscles. This works if you have the extra fat to burn, at least it has for me. I am still trying to refine the process of how far out I can eat or how close to the event but the consensus seems to be about 3 hours. The added benefit is the pre race butterflies didn't shake anythig loose- nothing to shake loose. If you decide to try this just make sure you have adequate post race nutrition readily available. There is a link in this post to a more detailed explaination. Good luck.

I typically eat fruit and either cereal or a granola bar no later than 3 hours before a sprint race start then gel from a flask once I get on the bike and again about 2 miles from the bike finish. It works for me but I definitely agree with the idea of finding out what works for you.

The bullet notes to take with you -
1) find out what works with you, everyone is different
2) high fiber foods can 'move' quicker, high fat foods can 'move' slower
3) highly acid foods, such as some dried berries and fruit juices, don't sit too well with many people during high activity

As for me, I am blessed with a very strong stomach and typically eat a gigantic (I mean just huge) bowl of plain steel-cut oatmeal before a race with some cinnamon and raisins (acidic, but it's ok for) about 2-3 hours pre-race and then I'll usually have a GU about 30 minutes before race start.

Experiment as you see fit, finding out what you can eat pre-race is a very important part of training that is easy to neglect. I would definitely recommend eating something though.
