Does anybody know if you volunter at an Ironman event, do you get to sign up before the general registration takes place? I have heard this rumor but can not find it to be true in print any place and am wondering if the old saying, "If it sounds to goog to be true, it is." applies here. Thanks for any information.

I volunteered at IMLP this summer to get into the race for next year...
You have to volunteer on-line at the web site.
Get your t shirt or wrist band when you show up to volunteer. (different races appear to be doing different things to identify Vols)
Put in at least a four hour shift. My wife and friend and I did a 12er. And, oh yes, they keep track of when you show and when you leave.
Go to registration the next morning and get in line...bring your shirt or wrist band. If you don't have them, no volunteer line for you...and they have no intention of running off to find your name on a list to verify.
When they opened registration for us they made two lines one for Vols one for general registration.
They took all the Volunteers first then the general folks.
They give you a voucher with a number on it. You fill it out. They check your ID (So make sure you bring some) and keep a copy of the voucher. You go home and sign up on line per their instructions.
One voucher per person. You can only sign up yourself.
The line started forming at 1am and by 6 when I got there it was 200 people long...by 9 when registration opened it was at least...well it was looong.
Good luck!

Anton, do you pay in line, or when you get home and register online?
I'm planning to vol for IMFL this year and was wondering if I needed to take some type of payment with me.

For IMLP you took the voucher home and paid when you registered on line a few days later.
I believe it was the same way for IMCD.
I can't speak for IMFL. Go to the site and click on the volunteer tab. there may be more info there.

It was the same deal at IMoo this year. Volunteers got first service on Monday morning for vouchers. Email arrived a week later with direction on how to sign up and pay online through Active.com.
