For IM races in the US...how do they break down the Kona slots by AG, on the page for IMLou, it says 45 AG spots and 5 pro slots...but how do I know how many of the 45 slots goto, say the F18-24 AG?

I am tracking someone and don't know how I'll know if she qualifies.

By demographics.
First they allot one slot per age-group for the winner,
then sprinkle the remainder over the age groups with the most entrants, usually the mens 35-39 gets the most slots, but of course it varies.

If there are no W60-64 then that slot gets tossed into the AG with the most entrants, and so on.

You can check the historical qualifying times per event or per year on http://triresults.com. It will give you a general idea of how many slots per AG there have been in the past. Here's the direct link to the reports page:

I have never even been close so I am not really worrying about it ;-)

Congrats that you have a possible contender to track! ;-)

Nothing to it, but to do it

An example: This years IMLP had 20 women in the 18-24 AG.
They got one Kona slot. The Kona qualifier finished in 11:08.
IM Canada and IM Wisconsin both had 21 women in that AG, also with one Kona slot... finish times were 10:34 and 11:34(?) respectively.
It looks like your athlete will have to be first in their AG, 11:30 or faster and hope someone faster doesn't show up.
Let us know if she Quals!

I haven't heard the official, but looks like she didn't make it....she went 11:09 (11 minutes faster than last year when she won her AG, in worse conditions from what I can tell). BUT, as you said, someone faster showed up...across the board. Faster swim, bike and run...finished around 10:38.

Oh well, still an impressive performance by any standards

Kona is only a few weeks away, so if people are going to pass on their Kona slot, this might be the race with the most passes. Someone I know looks like they finished 6th in the M35-39 AG, and I think he will make the cut.
