So it looks like IM Cozumel and IM Louisville have online registration which allows for somewhat easy registration. I have a friend that is interested in doing a IM with me in 2009 but he wants to try to get into FL or Wisconsin; charity if needed. (But I don't want a charity spot)

Louisville seems tempting because I will be able to wear a wetsuit (I think); Cozumel no wetsuit. 2.4 mile swim with no wetsuit in the ocean seems a bit rough...

Any suggestions?

I'm driving to Madison to volunteer and register for Wisconsin. If you want a sure thing... volunteer.

True, no wetsuit at Coz..but salt water provides more buoyancy than fresh.
Louisville can be HOT and STEAMY in August a wet suit might suck. Talk to some folks from last year.
Florida and Wisconsin sure aren't Coz and Louisville...You guys might be at cross purposes...better hash this out some more...
+1 on the volunteering...slot guaranteed.

for me I think cozumel would be an easier sell to Mrs. H and no offense to the great state of KY but it just looks cooler.

In regards to Cancun, I was told that you can still where a wetsuit, just won't be eligible to place or for prizes. Is this true?

as for the wetsuit, they make them new mini suits that are sleeveless and cut off at the knee, aka 'cheater suit'. Someday when I do Cancun, I'm getting one!

Yeah living in boston I don't really want to waste vacation time to go to Wisconsin to volunteer, I guess I could do FL but no wetsuit there either...sH$T I knew I should have volunteered at LP.

Coz. I'm sure Louisvile is nice and all, but Coz would definitely make for a better post-race party. I'm eyeing that for my next one also. Easy to extend it to a vacation.

trisooner-

nice bro now that makes sense to me...I am just a wimp sometimes out in the ocean especially if it is choppy...I grew up near lakes so they are easier for me.

Good also grab a girl to make it a mini vacation could be fun!

The swim in Cozumel in in very calm waters (between the island and mainland) so it is difficult to have big waves. November is the best time of the year, since it is not to hot or humid and it won't rain. Besides you will be swimming close to the reef, around tropical fish.

Straight off the ironman website:

"The swim takes place in the Gulf of Mexico. The water is warm enough for a comfortable swim, but cool enough to allow wetsuits -- every triathletes dream."

If you're using the ability to use a wetsuit as a qualifier for doing the race, then FL is a good one. The run will be scorching hot, but it's flat and near the gulf, so you'll likely have some breeze.

These are just for reducing your drag in the water. They give you less than 71(?)g of buoyancy, which is why they are allowed in non-wetsuit swims. Not going to help you all that much unless you're swimming ridiculously fast.

IM Louisville was no wetsuit last year. At every race the wetsuit issue comes down to water temp on the day of -- they can give a very good guess at what it will be, but you can't be sure exactly what the weather will do right around the race.

I did IM Louisville last year and loved it -- sure it was hot, but signing up for a race in Aug in KY I knew it would be and trained for the heat and it wasn't really a problem for me. The bike course was pretty and fun, and the finish line area was awesome.

IM Cozumel looks beautiful too though.

My advice on picking an IM? Do the one that gets you the most exicited, or if you have family do they one that both you and they get most excited about.
