I was doing a 12-mile OW swim around Key West last summer and the Coast Guard stopped people because of a storm coming in. We waited til they left then kept going anyway. The storm missed the island.

I was ready to keep going. It was the best I ever felt after 23 miles. I was tempted to unofficially finish the last 3 laps.
I even ditched the copper pipe and copper underwear ;-)

What happens when you are involved in a race, and they close the course, and you have not finished?
I started the Turkey Swamp 50k and was done with 9 of 12 loops. I only completed 37.42K(23.25 miles) and then the park rangers closed the park due to lightning so they stopped us.
They gave us the medal and the finishers hat and that was it.
Since I didn't DNF and they closed the course, like Chicago, what happens?
Nothing to it, but to do it
