I am new to triathlons, I've done one (last September). I did the bike on a Bianchi mountain bike. It was somewhat painful. That being said, I'm training for one this September and would like to try out a roadbike. I am on a SERIOUS budget and found the GMC Denali. I realize this is at the low low end (if not lowest end) of road bikes. Does anyone know anything about them? Before I invest in a good bike, I want to make sure tris are something I want to stick with.

Thanks!

don't know much about them at all. my lousy .02 check w/ a good local bike shop and tell your budget and see they fit you with something that fits you. might be used but it will fit and make your life easier. even if you stick w/ the denali you get an idea about what to look for in bikes. good luck and have fun

you may also check craigslist in your area to buy somebody's older road bike...i think you may get more durable components, a better frame, and a lighter bike.

if the mountain bike just doesn't fit you properly, it's probably worth moving on...but if it fits ok, you may also be better putting some slicks on and waiting a little while and saving some cash up

+1

You're proabably better off sticking with what you have until you save up enough to get a road bike, especially since you're not sure if you want to stick with Triathlons.

I will jump on the bandwagon with stick with what you have until you are sure you like doing triathlons. You will have plenty of time to spend money when you get hooked. ;-)

Nothing to it, but to do it

You're much better off buying an old used bike than a GMC Denali. It's absolutely worthless. It'll fall apart. The old road bike will most likely be faster, too.

Check out what local shops have in the used department. I picked up a 79 schwinn le tour that i did my first season on. Still use it to commute and havent had a single problem with it.

I did my first race on a mountain bike. Did my second on that. The second race was less than a month later, and a longer distance and i still averaged about 5mph faster on the old ass road bike than i did on my rather nice cannondale mtb. After deciding to stick with the sport i saved up and dropped bank on a nice new road bike, but still do half my riding on the schwinn. I highly recommend this path.
