Hey everybody,

I just started my training for IM CDA 09 and am looking for some good tips for the bike. I have been riding now a few times ~20mi and am finding myself in a weird cadence on the bike. It's pedal, pedal, pedal, cruise, pedal, pedal, pedal, cruise and so on. Am I in the wrong gear, or should I be moving ALL the time? Any help would be appreciated.

In general, you want a cadence between 80-100 RPMs. But before you focus on trying to acheive a cadence in that range, try to find a gear combination that allows you to consistantly pedal on flats. It's hard to tell what's going on without seeing you do it. Do you think it's fast or slow?

You should be able to consistently spin, without having to stop and cruise.

That being said, there are times when you will likely stop pedaling, in a race or on long rides, to conserve energy... but it shouldn't be because you have to.

Yes, I think it's because I'm slow still. I have a long ways to go before I'm in any shape for the 112mi necessary to finish. I will see if I can find a combination that works better for the whole ride. I just wanted to make sure that I was on the right track still. I want to make sure to ride well on race day because that is where my time will be made or lost, so your comments are appreciated. Many thanks.

Have a look at this article:
http://tinyurl.com/azoyr

- Get a speedometer with cadence meter (you can pick this up cheap, $15)
- Ride, trying to find a gear where you're able to spin 90rpm without having to stop pedaling

You might be slow at first, but if you can master the cadence & constant spinning, then you can work on spinning higher gears. Before you know it, you'll be blowing by people and feeling like a rocket. :)

Good luck!

I just want to clarify something, you will always switch gears to find that combination that allows you to continuously pedal. It's a neverending process during a ride. That's why they give you all of those gears. ;)
