I just enjoyed a tasty Zone Perfect bar (fudge graham) and read the ingredient list. It started off with Soy Protein Nuggets, that's good, onto the chocolate coating, no bad oils there, that's good. Moving down the line a word caught my eye, "fructooligosaccharides", this is the correct spelling.

Can anyone give me the lowdown on this crazy ingredient? I like to avoid things with high fructose corn syrup and such, but I don't know what kind of scientifically engineered ingredient this is, and if I should avoid it.

Googled it and from Wikipidia:
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) also sometimes called oligofructose or oligofructan, is a class of oligosaccharides used as an artificial or alternative sweetener.

There is more, but I won't bore you....

Basically it's a plant derived sugar that only breaks down in the large intestine. It adds sweetness to a product, but also contributes to it's fiber content. Been used for years (particularly in Japan) as a dietary supplement to increase intestinal flora (the good bacteria) though it can be gas producing (via the not so good bacteria).

I took biochem last semester and I agree that its probably a plant derived sugar. Oligo means a few and saccharide is just a sugar. Its actually more likely to be natural than engineered I would say.
