New tire Recommendations

I need some new tires. The last 3 times I've taken mine out on the open road, I've gotten 3 flats. Each time, its been something new I picked up on the road, I swear - I've cleaned out the insides of the tires with extreme care. In each case, its been the slow leak flat that I didn't notice until the tire was flat hours after the ride.

I found this link:
Prior Tire Topic, which was helpful.

I'm riding 700x23C's as well, but I'm 205 pounds and well, apparently, there lots of stuff I ride through. I don't intend to ride through the crap, but it seems I may be magnetic toward the junk.

Any other tire recos that make sense, or just stick with the ideas on the above?

I was getting flats and went with Continental Gatorskins. No flats since I got them, about 1,500 miles, inlcuding trainer rides. I ride Continental Triathlon for races. If you want something lighter, a lot of people swear by the Conti 4000 as well. I figured the extra weight really did not matter since I my weight goes between 195-205 and that is more significant than tire weight.

Finishing the race is the only thing that validates the cause.

I like the Micheline Pro Race 2. Haven't tried Pro Race 3 yet.

For training I ride Bontrager Race X Lite Hardcases. These things are bombproof. With that comes some added weight like 40 grams more than an average training tire, which is why I would not recommend for racing. But if you never want to have a flat again while training, try these out.

my year-round commuter/training experience:
michelin krylions were great for me
my luck w/ bontragers not good at all: lots of cuts & punctures
gatorskins were great too

You are all wearing me down with the talk of the Pro Race 2's.... any advantages of them vs. the Krylions? I know the Krylions are a bit heavier, but are supposed to be more puncture resistant. I haven't had any real puncture problems to date, but I'd hate to get something less durable...

Is the weight trade-off worth it to go with a "race" tire?

I went from getting a flat every other ride on Vittoria Diamante's to no flats in 4 months on Michelin Pro 2 Race. I can't compare to any of the other tires mentioned on here, but I have been thrilled with the MP2R. They are light, handle well and have proven to be very puncture resistant.

if i had a choice, i wouldn't race in the Krylions, but if you want to just have one set of tires, they are VERY serviceable for training and racing. i think they're MUCH more flat resistant than the PR2's (i actually don't think the PR2's are all that when it comes to puncture resistance, but they are grippy and fast)

Right now, I have the CST UltraSpeeds and have never had a puncture flat. I don't know if they are really puncture resistant, but I have ridden through glass, and wood splinters... maybe I'm just lucky.

I can honestly say that I've been really happy with them, and they are pretty smooth and fast, and seem to be pretty tough... But they are "cheaper" tires, so I just wonder what I am missing vs. a "real" race tire. I know that CST manufactures Maxxis tires, so they have the potential to be good... About 500 miles on them so far, and no problems. They are actually pretty light, I think the weight is comparable to PR2's. Does anyone know which tires in the Maxxis line these would match up to?

I don't know... maybe I'm beating a dead horse here. But, I know that somewhere around 99% of the people on this forum use bike tires, so maybe I'm just trying to stimulate a bit more response ;)

This is great! I'm going to pull a lot of this feedback together shortly, but how's this for fun - as I went to do my ride tonight - I noticed... yup, you guessed it. On my last ride out I actually got TWO flats. The front went flat within a few hours, the back went flat about a day later... Amazing. Clearly, I have to replace the continental 3000's I have on there now.

I'll get this all together, and let you know what I end up doing...

It's interesting that you should mention that. Your post got my wheels turning... today when I was in my LBS, I inquired about the Mondo tire, and was told that they have a 90 day (nearly no-questions-asked) guarantee against any sort of damage. I was also told that Specialized is VERY liberal about this guarantee, and has taken tires that have been damaged due to blatant negligence. To the point that the Manager told me... "if on the last day, you want new tires and you slash it with a knife... I didn't see anything... they will take it." They also sell the PR2's and said that a lot of customers have been unhappy with them because they seem to become damaged easily.

They also have the Roubaix, which is supposed to be similar to the Krylion in puncture/flat resistance. There's also the "open tubular" design that is supposed to be tubular performance out of a clincher. Supposedly you use regular tubes, and the tire takes ~200psi. (This conflicts w/Specialized's website)... he said that he's seen blowouts go through carbon rims. That's not a good day.

I'm surprised about all the PR2 damage and flats -- I don't want to type the number of flats I've had with 'em since it's just asking for trouble, but the only major issue I had was when my back wheel came off at about 30mph and jammed and then it did have bald patches -- but still got me home without flatting.

It is also rated as one of the fastest tires -- we picked it because they are a really good balance of performance (weight, rolling resistance) and puncture-proofness.

I tell you, I must have some bad wheel Karma. I've started riding my mountain bike to the train station for my commute to work. Tonight when I got off the train... there it was a flat on the front wheel. I was lucky - the LBS is on my way home and they were still there late, so I got it fixed and road home - the wheel tape on the inside had blown and the spokes pierced the tube...
