Bike shorts Vs Padded saddle

Even though it summer, I've still been doing a lot of my riding indoors on the trainer. Between family concerns and getting home late from work, it just seems to happen that way. I've been doing much longer and intense workouts lately, and well with the non forgiveness of the trainer, the sit bones have been objecting a little.

I have a big cushy saddle cover that I had purchased from my actual spin bike eons ago and I've been considering throwing that on the bike while its on the trainer. Every time I put it on the seat though, I just look at it, say HTFU and take it back off on the theory that I won't have it during a race... You know the schtick.

That got me thinking though... Why do we ride with these super light saddles that are hard as rocks and then wear a pad on our body that we drag along with us on the run (and the swim). It suddenly seemed backwards. Wouldn't we want to wear running shorts, but have a pad on the saddle, so the only time we have to carry the extra weight is on the bike?

I guess It's probably not that big of an issue, but just seemed funny. Well, I guess I just really want to throw that cushion on my saddle as my indoor riding volume increases.

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Put the cushion on your saddle. Working out in the trainer sucks enough as it is - give yourself a break!

I wear tri shorts to ride all the time now and the padding is pretty thin. I just like it better. Thick padding doesn't really seem to help much. But that's on the road. In the trainer I would probably wear bike shorts because on the trainer you tend to mash the #$@#$@ out of your groin. It's just different.

Envision my favorite Gary Larson comic (dog outside open window, man sleeping in bed, captio - Puuut the caaat out") and say it with me "Puuuut the paaaaaad on"

They actually make triathlon-specific saddle covers for that very reason. The cover is usually made of neoprene, which adds a little padding to the saddle, since many people wear tri-shorts with thinner padding. I think QR and Desoto make them...

Some non-biking colleagues of mine asked a similar question, "Why do cyclists wear this skin tight padded bicycling shorts on a tiny hard seats? Why not have a more cushioned seat?" I can explain the skin-tight, for aerodynamic even muscle support reasons, but why the pad in the shorts on a tiny hard seat? Is it just easier to put the padding on your butt in the right places than to have a seat be cusioned more?

ndta - My saddle is actually a Tri-gel with a gel filled nose. Overall, riding on the road, I rarely have trouble. But now that I'm up to 1.5 hours on the trainer, the rigidity is getting to me. I'm going to start using my padded seat cushion for the long trainer rides now that my trifuel friends won't make fun of me for it :)
