Yes! I'll haveanothercupplease.....
Hmmm. I guess I'll have to change my post-workout chocolate milk into a post-workout Mocha Latte. Or six.
Then it must be good to have caffeine in my gu's then too.... yea!

Interesting. I can't really do caffeine myself, but one thing that popped out at me was:
"throughout the four-hour recovery period, the caffeinated drink resulted in higher levels of blood glucose and plasma insulin"
It's interesting that I haven't seen this noted in the regular press. Perhaps all those high-carb mochas and lattes are contributing even more to the rise in diabetes among non-athletes, if they're boosting people's insulin levels above what a carb drink alone would do.
Of course for athletes, this isn't as much of an issue (unless one is already diabetic) but this is interesting info.

Hmmm...maybe I'll stop driving my car and just ride my bike or run to Starbucks!
Great article by the way. Thanks for sharing.
Coffee gets more and more awesome all the time :-)
I haven't bought coffee from Fourbucks in probably 2 years. $1.50 for Quick Chek's Extreme Caffeine is fine by me ;-)
I hate how these studies never give enough information to really be relevant. I would have liked to see the difference after 12 and 24 hours since most people usually wait more than 4 hours between workouts. They didn't give any hints about how close the post-recovery levels were to baseline levels. This study does add to the evidence that caffeine accelerates glucose uptake, but I thought that was pretty well established already. Maybe their next study will have more details...
---We're not actually turning this newsletter over to Dr. Gabe Mirkin, but he keeps providing interesting and pertinent information. Besides the sit-ups advice above, one of his recent tips is titled, "Caffeine Boosts Hot Weather Performance." Reports the good doctor: "A study from Toledo, Spain shows that giving caffeine to dehydrated bicycle racers helps them ride faster, longer and with more power in hot weather (Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, July 2008). When combined with water and carbohydrates, caffeine ingestion increases the force of muscular contractions . . . . Another recent study from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign shows that caffeine helps to reduce muscle pain in riders pedaling as hard and as long as they can (International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, May 2008). Other studies have shown that caffeine is a diuretic only when a person is at rest, not during exercise. These reported benefits of caffeine for cyclists can be expected to apply to other athletes as well. However, people with heart damage should be cautious about taking caffeine before exercising. It is a stimulant and may increase risk of irregular heart beats."
From today's RoadBikeRider Newsletter...yay coffee!
