Question about caloric intake on bike

I broke down and bought some Infinit and want to make the super-concentrate for the bike (yes, I have trained with Infinit a few times in the past month). This is my third Ironman, and in the past I just ate and drank as much as possible. This time, though, I am shooting for a more calorically efficient bike.

I am 35, male, 190lbs, and I’m shooting for a 6-hour bike. I know that part of the nutrition strategy on the bike is to consume enough to also fuel the upcoming marathon. How many servings and calories should I shoot for? (You'd think I should already know this, but in the past I just ate the whole way.)

My Infinit mix is 340 calories per serving. I know I burn around 5,000 calories on a 100 mile bike. So, if I were to use only Infinit, 5,000/340 = 14 servings? 28 scoops! That’s like half the jug and two water bottles full of concentrate. Seriously? I can also easily eat Clifs and Gu, too.

You're obviously more experienced than I am, but my PT who is also a marathon coach and a 5-time Ironman suggests consuming at least 2x your body weight in calories every hour on the bike.

190 x 2 = 380 calories x 6 hours = 2280 calories. Doesn't make sense though, considering you say you burn 5000 on a century ride.

I think the rule of thumb is that you should NOT aim for full caloric replacement on the bike. Rather, go for the most you can comfortably stomach on a per-hour basis at your effort level. For me (33, 6'1", 185), that is around 300 cal/hr at an aerobic HR. Some people our size can go as high as 400+ cal/hr., others are as low as the mid 200s. How you feel when you start running will tell you if you went too high.

Like you, I am planning to use the Infinit concentrate with 2x900 calorie bottles and enough water to reach Infinit's recommended osmolality. I'll also carry a bit of food and some gels as an emergency backup buffer (like in case I flat) or just to break up the monotony. Don't get too attached to your eating schedule if things go bad.

As a side note, my first batch had Infinit's recommended amount of protein for IM in it. That made me feel bloated and gassy as all hell, even when still on the bike. Running afterwards was painful. I have relegated that mix to recovery drink status. My current batch has 0 protein and I am handling it much better.

I thought it was said a seminar I attended that our bodies can efficiently only burn 300-350 calories an hour. I've heard of Infinit but haven't used it. For IMFL last year I mixed 4 bottles with around 400 calories each. I had 2 bottles on my bike and 2 in my special needs bag. I used that and also drank water at the aid stations. I did fill a gel flask with a concentrate for the run that I sip on and drank water with.

The super-concentrate is a mix that you end up mixing with water in another bottle or drink with water, right?

My buddy did something like that, he would mix a concentrate, pour it in the water bottle and mark it with electrical tape and repeat until he had a full bottle. He would then take the concentrate and pour it in his aero-bar water bottle and then add water and he went. That was he did not need to stop and get his special needs bag like me.

Have a good race this weekend!

I aim for 30-40% caloric intake vs expenditure. How do you preform on an all liquid diet? If ok I'd try to experiment with the Infinite only. If your body starts to reject fluid calories at some point like mine try mixing in the bars. My tummy need variety or it gets angry. Good luck with nutrition testing!

What you can consume and what you can burn are two different numbers. I can burn 1000 calories an hour, but I can only consume 400 calories. That's the difference.

The "average" person can consume approximately 240-280 calories an hour. My guess is at 190, you're probably more in the 300+ range.

Your mix of 340 is pretty much fully maxed out for Infinit.
Mine was at 330 - I'm 175lbs.
I started having some issues with that mix.
I talked with Michael Folan - President of Infinit - I sent in an e-mail on their support site. He sent me an e-mail with his # asking me to call him.
I did, and we discussed my formula mix for a good 15 minutes. He was extremely helpful. Ended up dialing down the calories and some other adjustments. And it works much better for me now!

I would recommend just contacting Infinit and discussing it with them - they are very receptive and helpful.
