My first ice bath

Whew, what an experience!
I've put countless bags of ice all over my body, but never before have I actually submerged my lower half in a cold tub with ice floating in it. It took my breath away just easing myself into it and the first two minutes were torture. But much like a bag of ice on a knee, it mellowed out and wasn't so bad for the next 18 minutes. Though when I got out and walked around the bathroom I had to be careful because I couldn't trust my footing for a few minutes, I was too frozen.

I'll say, I had a full weekend of training and I took this bath immediately after a 3 hour bike and my legs didn't feel tired and heavy afterwards. This really is a great way to recover!

I've found that cold water is enough for me, but I'm in Minnesota so the water out of the tap is pretty cold even in the summer (at least that's what I tell myself ... maybe I need to HTFU and put some ice in the tub next weekend).

(In a high pitched voice) I Agree! Ice baths are the best cold water baths work well too. Does make for a lot of shrinkage though! After doing it my legs feel like they can just do it all again...

LOL! I just did this for the first time last night. Man, what a difference it makes! I'm now sold on the idea and for some sick reason am looking forward to taking one next weekend.

On hot days ... it's what gets me through the last half of a long run. Knowing that I've got a cold bath and a cup of coffee waiting for me with the latest issues of my running and triathlete magazines waiting to be read.

I've never done this, but always wanted to try. Just curious- How many pounds of ice do you buy at the store??

I'm new to this whole concept. So, I'm curious, when should you do the ice bath? Is it just right after you get back from your workout, or should there be a buffer period in there somewhere? Should you just submerge your lower half (I can't imagine the whole body going under)? Anyone want to do a quick run-down on ice baths for noobs?

Sorry for the threadjack. I figured this didn't really warrant a whole new thread.

Instead of buying ice bags, I make sure to save my old milk cartons. Fill them up with water and throw them in my extra freezer. They're nice! Also, I get a few small water bottles and freeze those too. When they start melting a bit, I can fill up with water (still with a little ice in them) and have some freezing cold water to drizzle over other parts of me that may be sore. I love the ice bath too, minus the shrinkage. :)

I used up all the ice I had in the freezer and even stole some from the bags my roommate had for her after she runs. When she saw the empty bags later and wondered where all her ice went she was really confused when I said "down the drain".

Next time I'll either buy extra from a store or save up a bunch in the freezer all week for a weekend bath.

I think I used two 8 or 10 pound bags, and after 20 min, there was still a little ice left. It seemed like the right amount.

I should do it more often, but it's not something I look forward to. I haven't been doing a lot of miles, but yesterday I ran 15 miles, and I'm paying for it today. I should of done the ice bath.

How often does everyone take an ice bath, and after which workouts? My guess is that it's only after 90-120 min runs, but maybe people do it after a long bike or short and insense hill workout.

I think I would prefer sore and tired legs.

I save ice baths for those days where I know i'm going to hurt later...long runs especially

I haven't had an ice bath in a long time, but I loved them. In high school most of my xc team would add more ice and sit in the ice baths enjoying ourselves while the football players would struggle to keep their ankle (or heaven forbid the knee) submerged for 15 minutes...

I can attest to this method. Lake Superior has an average temp somewhere around 56 degrees F... after the Grandmas marathon I ALWAYS completely submerge myself and then stand in the water for a good 10 minutes.... By Tuesday I feel like a champ, whereas at any other marathon where there isn't a huge freezing cold lake nearby, I usually limp like a gangsta for 5 days straight.

+1

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Lol, "limp like a gangsta".
Ever see the Scrubs episode where JD "gangsta leans" down the hall in the motorized chair?

At least one 8-lb bag of ice. Depending on how warm the 'cold' water is that comes out of the tap, maybe two. Your 'first time' is really painful. It's mostly just lower legs anyways, so I wrap my upper body in the bath towel or I start shivering all over. But you really need to buy a microbrew six pack to set in the ice with you, too.

TriSooner's advice about the microbrew is a great idea...heck even a bike magazine would be nice. I was not prepared and just got in, no towel for my upperbody and nothing to take my mind of the bath...just a watch to count the minutes. I think if I'm prepared next time these baths may not be so bad...even something to look forward to with something to sip on ;)
