Help: Need training ideas
I broke this down for easy reading to the following:
Oh and I'm a lousy swimmer swimmerMon+Wed+Fri, i have the option to either cycle all the way into uni (43km), or run to my friends house (10km) and get a lift, or run to the train station (15km).
Tue+Thur morning I've got swimming training with the uni team, and I don't want to be energy depleted by the time I get there, so I'll drive.I have HEAPS* of free time on Mon/tue/wed/thur. Friday, my only exercise will be commuting to uni (either run or cycle).
I'm sore the next day after a 10km run,
5 hour block free on tuesday
But the real question is... What are you training for?

triathlons, fool :D
Nah seriously, I just want a good solid tri base to begin with, and build on that.. depending on which length takes my fancy more or if im training for something specific in the future
and cheers for the editing
It really helps to know whether or not you're training for IM or if you're training for a sprint. How you'd utilize your time for each of these would be different. How about if I ask the question differently... are you going to stay at HIM or less or could you possibly do an IM? Also, any idea of WHEN you will have your race... next month... 6 months... next year?

The thought of the iron man is always on my mind, but I don't expect that to happen for at least 12 months.
Rego for the triathlon season opens in a few days, there's no 08 race calendars floating around, and it's a Sunday so I can't ring around at the moment to find out event dates, my guess is tri events will start soon.
I can't really be any more specific, other than tri races start soon, and I want to be as prepared as I can be for my first sprint, but not train 100% specifically for that, so if there's an oly a few weeks later, I won't feel so crippled 5m into the run. That help any? Or not at all..?
go to www.trifind.com they list all the races.
For swimming you need to focus on your form. It takes a lot of work to get better at swimming. I read the Total Immersion book and that really helped me. I think you should do 1-2 swims per week outside of the team because of that being your weakest event.
Nice site, the input is actually appreciated (the both of you) but I'm from Australia so no bingo there.

So if you guys had TONS of free time, how would you divvy it up into the 3 disciplines?
Thanks to 4 months of commuting to uni and back, 5 days per week, 43km one way (a lazy 430km per week :D ) had 3 side effects on me:
Im a gun on the bike (i think?)
Mighty fine aerobic base (i think?)
Helped DRAMATICALLY with running (no previous running/training, and I can bust out 10km in a bit over 40minutes)
Next semester, things will change though. Oh and I'm a lousy swimmer swimmer :-/ and i definitely figure I should run more, but I don't want to taper off my cycling too much. I've run a grand total of 2 times.

So, training ideas?
Things to note:
I don't pull up sore the next day after cycling, unless it's a massive out-of-the-ordinary anaerobic session (20km sprint, hills riding, anything similar)
The pool is open every day.
I'm sore the next day after a 10km run, but I think that'll slowly subside akin to my cycling.
I can chuck my bike in my car for tue/thur.
I can (quite obviously) bring in running shoes any day I like. I have a locker at uni with plenty of fresh clothes and whatnot, that's not a drama.
I get the feeling I should swim ~5 days per week, because I SUCKED at anything exercise related before I committed to cycling so much last semester, I figure, throwing myself in the deep-end (no pun intended) will do the same for my swimming?
And yes I rambled on waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much, sorry! But I'd love some ideas.
*and by heaps, I mean on Monday I have 1 two hour lecture, and that's it, I have a 5 hour block free on tuesday in between the morning swim training and my next lecture. Thur I have a 4 hour block free.
