Swallowing air/water

Hi all,

I've noticed as I'm swimming that after my breath but before I exhale I'm swallowing. It's really subtle, took me a long time to even notice I was doing it!

I think that it's because of the water that's getting into my mouth/throat. I've tried focusing on it, and I just can't seem to stop! When I switch to a breathstroke, I don't do it, presumably because the breath is entirely out of the water and I don't get any in my mouth.

Any advice is appreciated... it really has an impact, as I get some digestive tract type of issues (*ahem*) due to all the swallowed air. You don't want to be in a small enclosed space with me after a swim... ;) In my first triathlon, I had brutal cramps late in the race, and I think it's likely related.

Thanks in advance,
jono

Repetitious habits are hard to break.
Have you tried to actively monitor it when swimming?
(I'm assuming so, since you bring it up.)

But do you do it at a certain workload or all the time? When breathing on 1 side or the other?(both?)

I seem to remember doing that when I swam as a child. I'd belch and...you know.

Something you might try.... I find it hard to swallow after turning to breathe when, as soon as I take a breath in, if I press the my tongue into the roof of my mouth. Not the tip of the tongue, but the middle to back part. You can swallow saliva and such, it seems to really hard to swallow a gulp of air with the tongue in this position.

I hope this helps.....(if not I'm sure the other Trifulers have some great suggestions.)

I manged to swallow even with my tongue in the roof of my mouth... ugh!

I really concentrated on this today, and I figured out two things.

1) I'm swallowing water. When I do the front crawl, most of the time water gets in and runs down my throat, so when I turn back into the water I have to swallow before I start exhaling. I'm at a loss what to do... seems like if I don't swallow I'll probably choke on air? I don't know.

2) I'm gulping air when I breathe rather than inhaling nicely... when I slowed down and paid more attention, I took in nicer breaths. Something to work on... this will probably help the bloated feeling, as it might be where I'm swallowing much of the air.

All very frustrating!!!

When do you exhale? I tend to exhale underwater so even if you do get some water you are more likely to spit it out that way than swallow.

Slow down for sure so you can inhale/exhale smoothly. Do that for many repititions than work on your speed. "Slow is smooth....smooth is fast."

I think it was the Standford swim team that used to do 50m intervals with a mouth full of water to improve their breathing and to "get used to the feel of drowning" as one team member said. Not sure I'd recommend that though. ;)

I exhale underwater... this swallow/gulp of water happens just before I start exhaling.

Might just be a mental thing, I'll keep paying attention to it and hopefully it'll get better with time.

For me, pool (or lake) water is the last thing I want to swallow, so, I am always "spitting" when I exhale. Probably I'm spitting the little bit of water that I get on my inhale. To be honest though, I've never really thought about it - until now.

I've just tried to really focus on getting a good concentrated turn of the head so I get a clear breath. I do this to both sides although breathing to my right is much smoother and efficeint. When water is in the mouth, I exhale it underwater or spit it out before my breath.
